Nation of Nagar

Written by Salen

The nation of Nagar is located in Southern Tamia, under the Black Mountains. The people of Nagar are almost all dwarven with a very small human presence in the various cities. Their villages can be found both above and below the mountain range, as mining and harvesting are both ways of life in Nagar. The black rock found among the Black Mountains is Obsidian and is made into weapons for dwarves and dwarven friends alike. The Hot Spire, the only fully live volcano, stands as the prominent feature in the region, and the Geartracks run right under the mountain range to all of the dwarven cities.

Capitol City & Rulership

The capitol of Nagar is Xan'var, The Deep City. This underground city is huge and carved out of the massive cavern it rests in. The dwarves here are proud of their capitol and the main chapter of the Gearsmith Guild is located here, as are the other guilds like the Miners guild, and the Merchants guild. Wide roads are carved out for the dwarven Gearwheels and the cavern is high enough for small copters to buzz above the city. The Nation is ruled by a dwarven Highsmith. The Highsmith is akin to a King, ruling his people and guiding the race as a whole; but that's not his only role. The Highsmith also rules the guild and has full creative veto power to keep the new inventions in check. This was implemented after the Clockwork Assassin debacle, where the guild's power was unchecked during the Great War.

Magic & Technology

Dwarves distrust magic. The long wars with the elves put this deep hatred and mistrust into their daily lives, yet there are other mysteries in Tamia. Long hidden away, dwarven Psions dwell in the nation of Nagar and secretly help the Highsmith with his secret network of information. Nagar is also home to the largest Gearwheel company and production is always at the top of the list for inventions. Specialty orders turn out rare wheels with designs only the rich can afford, and shipments are stored on the Gearrails and shipped out quickly. Nagar is also known for its underground Gearrail tracks, the only place in all of Tamia that the Gearrails travel this way. The tracks lead into huge tunnels, travelling around the tremendous caverns and making stops at all of the major cities here, exiting out the other end and back into the light.

Elemental Focus

Each of the four nations are tied to one of the elements. When magic of that type is used in that nation it has a stronger effect than anywhere else across Tamia. The primary element in Nagar is Fire and magic cast here is explosive and unpredictable at best. Anyone casting with the element of fire has the damage doubled, yet has a chance to backfire as well.

History

The history of Nagar is like most other nations. After the Dwarves came here from their shattered isles, they looked for a suitable place to start over again. They distrusted the faeries and other sylvan creatures of this land and went their own way. The dwarves marched towards the mountains in the south and explored the caverns there, knowing the rock as intimately as a lover. Their cities were already starting to thrive in only two decades, However, the first skirmishes with the neighboring elves started and sparked the First War. The dwarves weren't alone in this war though, the humans had joined as well,, yet it wasn't enough. The dwarves went to the humans of Garon'd and made a deal to get them to join the alliance, their new Gearrail idea would be situated in their nation. Then the dwarves were dealt a terrible blow.

Finding their Niche

With the war dragging on, the elves found a way to boost their already powerful magic by enslaving the faeries and went at the alliance with furious anger. The dwarves had some new weapons, black rock found in the mountains proved ideal against the elven armor, yet the powerful spells decimated the dwarven ranks quickly. The dwarves called for a retreat, backing towards their mountain strongholds and dropped the caverns down on the advancing elves. Cut off from the fighting, the dwarves went to work on how they could improve their tactics against the elves in the future. They started inventing and exploring their ideas as others worked on building their cities anew. When the truce was finally written, the dwarves had an advantage in trade. New Gearwheels and Gerarails were in the works and the other nations welcomed the trade prospects.

Geography

The majority of the cities of Nagar can be found above and below the Black Mountains. This area is mostly a vast mountain range dotted with small inactive volcanoes. One such volcano, The Hot Spire, to the north is always active and is the source of much of the lava that workers use in their forges. The villages mostly work iron mines and harvest obsidian. The obsidian rovers have the dangerous jobs of traversing the trails in gearwheel buckets and some of them tend to never come back. Sometimes it's simply an accident, other times its a rogue dragon defending its lair.

Obsidian

The nation is famous for its rare Obsidian blades, fashioned out of the rare rock found in deposits near the volcanoes. Brave dwarves travel in special Gearwheel buckets to collect the material that is fashioned this way, and their distribution is the most secretive process in all of Tamia. The blades never break no matter how much damage is done to them and It is suspected that if enough pressure is applied to one it would shatter to dust, but not actually break. The blades themselves tend to ignore most forms of armor that isn't made of metal, and even against metal they still do considerable damage. They are very lightweight, even when larger blades are fashioned.
