Marakhan Character in East Marches | World Anvil

Marakhan

Marakhan the Faceless was once a Devil who abandoned the Hells for the side of the Demons and became a powerful general in the Blood War. After his mayhem spilled onto the Material Plane, he was imprisoned. During his imprisonment, his motives changed. The war was suddenly less important compared to the legacy he was to leave behind. Thus, he abandoned his title of general and began his work on the unconventional creation of an offspring that was to be called The Unborn.   For a short time after The Unborn was as fully formed as they were ever going to be, having taken the name Veram, Marakhan negotiated for peace with Vareholm. He claimed he loved his child, and that he didn’t want any harm to come to them or Infernum, the floating city they’d built upon the old, discarded shell of Pinion that they wished to live on, apart from the greater world. This truce was fragile at best, and still some denied it, but peace persisted. At least, it persisted until the fall of Pikyr.   Shortly after Pikyr’s very public slaying, problems began to crop up all around Idriell involving the theft of souls, whole villages at a time. No one could figure out who was behind it until a creature called Animus Dolor was confronted, and a soul cage was found that was made from the same organic metal substance Marakhan and Veram were known to be able to create.   Heroes from Vareholm traveled to Infernum to confront Marakhan, but instead of being allowed inside, Veram met them on the ground and explained that their father had a new friend: Permaea, Soulchanter of Rigis Il. Together, they intended to destroy Vareholm.   Peacetime was over.   The next confrontation was by Marakhan’s design, and the result was his beheading. However, unbeknownst to the heroes, he and Permaea had been working on a new, stronger vessel to hold him, and his physical death was the last step in the process. To this day, Markhan’s old head is somewhere around Vareholm, taken as a trophy.
The next confrontation was the last. Vareholm located Infernum in the Shadowfell, with Veram’s help, and laid siege. Marakhan the Faceless had become Marakhan the Soulless, and despite the incredible amount of damage poured onto him, he wouldn’t die. He’d hidden a piece of himself in Veram, and as long as that piece was intact, Marakhan would not fall. Once Veram realized this, they morphed their arm into a spear and selflessly sank it deep into themselves, shoving their father’s essence out from the other side and destroying it.   Marakhan and Permaea were both killed that day by Y'landrothiel Staciaphor, Joana Elkwood, Poteryal Strannik Vsevidyashcheye Oko, Namarrkon, Captain Dame Ruga Dugal, Grygron "Gary" Grimcrag, Traains Weck Jr, Ser Constance of Tyr, Siliael Malthaliel, Gerard Vohon, and Veram the Unborn.
