Gretchen Farrow Character in East Marches | World Anvil

Gretchen Farrow

Physical Description

Minister Farrow is on the smaller side of human averages, standing at 5’2” tall. Her features imply youthful innocence with large, bright, brown eyes that shift to amber gold in the light of the day. Her long hair is the color of straw, and she wears a pair of roundly framed glasses. Her face in rest wears a soft, warm smile.   In the attempt to advertise her religiousness, the minister typically dresses in black and white clerical vestments.

Personality

Generally speaking, the minister is a conservative, compassionate, friendly young woman. She thoroughly enjoys being helpful, and she has a sense of duty when it comes to protecting people and those who are in need of aid. She idealizes being a force of goodness in the world while simultaneously accepting the bad and appreciating the delicate balance of the universe. However, her patience does have its limits.   Her devotion to Ao is supreme, but she harbors a deep wellspring of respect for all the gods. All doctrines hold slivers of truth and reality, and stewardship over all domains is necessary. To these ends, she’ll bestow her worship on almost any of them with exception to divine beings who revel in absolute abandon (such as demons), or beings who seek the death of the universe, thus undoing all of her lord’s good work (such as Shar or some elder evils).   She loves sunlight, chess, and equine creatures, and she dances like a total nerd.

Reputation

Gretchen has begun to develop renown for her conspiracy theories. She spends most of her time between the Pen and Parchment Scriptorium and Aryvandaar when she’s not at the Temple of Deities. Beyond the city, she somewhat frequently makes trips to Idriell’s other settlements, taking joy in forming relationships with locals and helping out.

Relationships

Lord Ao, the Overgod

Also called The Hidden One, she’s known him for many years, since before coming to the shores of Idriell. He gave her a specific job to do, but she also attempts to provide the service of being his representative to people when he will not be found. He still appears to her semi-regularly, either as a voice, a feeling, or a fully visualized manifestation. What little guidance he has offered her, she has taken as gospel. It influences her course of actions, as well as how she grows into a force of formidability in the Land of the Gods. Her love for him and the motivation for her loyalty are equal parts religious adoration and the adoration of a daughter for a father.

Caedus

In the process of repelling a necromantic cult from the land outside of Hyhill, the minister and her companions found a Ring of Mind Shielding. She discovered it contained the soul of a former adventurer from Vareholm’s earlier days, Caedus Ignis Letali. She agreed to let him teach her a thing or two, and together they’re attempting to both find him a new body as well as reclaim one of the legendary lanterns with insane barrier powers that had fallen into the hands of enemies nearly a decade ago.

Guth-tú-nakash

Their initial meeting was one in which the Hell Priest raised the minister from the dead after an altercation with the infamous Greatwyrm, Ckiral Xirmane. She now makes regular trips to Deus-dún to remain in contact with him, and with the Frontiersmen in the far northern reaches near Ril-Annon Ost. Guth-tú-nakash was the broker of her Baatorian Contract (Hell Contract), in which a loose alliance was formed with Levistus, the Archdevil of Stygia, in exchange for the Demhe Nodachi, a reality-breaking artifact weapon gifted to her by the King in Yellow. Eirþa’Gholl is the Amnizu responsible for fulfilling the Hells' part of the contract.

Adelfos

Adelfos is Gretchen’s Galineers Cob stallion. Small but stout, he’s a piebald ivory and dark brown mix with floofy hooves and a long mane.
