The Sink was a slum city by definition with debris-filled gutters and rat infested sewers, but the Dark Slums at the heart of the city took trash to a whole new level. A four-square-mile patch of city that used to be where the city’s 1% lived and worked. “Cherry Creek” as it used to be called, had been known for its trendy restaurants, microbreweries, and high-end shops. In those days, people like Mara wouldn’t have been able to afford the district. In fact, she would probably have been charged for even thinking about it.
But that all changed after the The Third World War.
An influx of new refugees from the now-uninhabitable Midwest region flooded into Colorado, driving the rich westward toward the coast. Fancy restaurants gave way to strip clubs, microbreweries turned into rowdy beer halls, and the merch went from designer handbags to workmen’s tools.
Loosely controlled even before the war, this area in particular became the favorite haunt of pimps, drug dealers, and whacked-out junkies looking for their next fix. A desperate person could find everything they didn’t know they wanted: a good time, a beautiful partner, after-market mods, mind-altering designer drugs, and cheap chemical poisons. Many hapless addicts fell completely into the temptations of the Dark Slums, only leaving when the undertaker drones carted away their lifeless bodies.
The Uninhabitable Wastes
Once full of modern, bustling cities, The Uninhabitable Wastes was now an area devoid of life, where the UCCA’s apocalyptic past still showed on the broken buildings and crumbling roadways. Considered the birthplace of the Third World War, it became a smoking, radioactive wasteland due the destruction of the Greysoft Genetic Research Laboratory.
