Oculus to the stars

You can only pray under the stars while under a roof in one place and you are standing in it.

- A Priest of Selûne

The goddess Selûne is worshipped all over Padun , but the largest and most impressive temple is located in the south-west of Icios in the harbour capitol Jingzhou.

Purpose / Function

The main purpose of this temple, as with so many others, is as a place of worship. In this case it is a place of worship of Selûne, goddess of moons, stars, navigation among others.

Due to the nature of Selûne, this temple draws many different people, from devout followers, to normal sailors and adventurers who wish to pray before venturing out into the world.

Naturally, in a temple as large as this one, there are some other purposes, mostly as a place to exchange information, mostly in the form of maps, both star maps and continental maps, in honour of Selûne.

Alterations

Ignoring the continuous additions that have been ongoing for decades if not centuries, the biggest change came 34 years ago, after the roof collapsed during the Goblin insurgence. The priest claimed that it was by Selûnes will that the roof collapsed, because she couldn't see the priests and other followers. So they created a new roof made out of very carefully crafted pieces of glass.

The pieces fit together perfectly, creating a dome that let light in, allowing those inside to see the stars and moons, while keeping everyone dry and safe. In order to increase the safety, some charms and other forms of magic were weaved into the dome, making it stronger and less prone to fracturing.

Architecture

Most of the temple is made out of stone, with the architecture changing depending on when the parts were built. Some of the oldest sections are centuries old, with a crude style that incorporates metal artwork directly in the stones themselves.

The newer style that appears in the surrounding structures, that houses priests among others, is more based on shaping the stone itself into shape. This makes statues and similar pieces of art more common in the newer areas.

History

Selûne has been worshipped for as long as anyone in Jingzhou can remember. Shrines have existed all over the place, but over time the one in place where the temple now stands began to attract an ever increasing amount of followers.

This prompted upgrades to the structure, turning the shrine into an altar and finally a temple that went from one room to the sprawling stone structure that stands today.

It should be noted that the temple has only been badly damaged once, as mentioned above. The most obvious damage was to the roof of the main hall since it no longer existed, but pretty much all structures needed fixing after the insurgence.
