Underdark
The Underdark is a system of caves beneath the surface of Durin. The Underdark is strange and unknown to those from the surface. Dwarves, kobolds, dark elves, duergar, and stranger races call these underground realms home.
Geography
It is known that the Underdark has three layers - there are no hard boundaries or borders between these layers.
- The Upperdark is the layer just beneath the surface, extending approximately five miles beneath the surface. It is primarily inhabited by Dwarf, Kobold, and other subterranean species that also venture onto the surface.
- The Lowerdark is between the Upperdark and Gloomdark, extending 5 miles to 20 miles beneath the surface. It is said that this layer is home to the Dark Elves and Duergar.
- The Gloomdark is the lowest layer, extending 20 miles to 100 miles beneath the surface. It is a realm of strong magic. Demonic corruption bleeds into the Gloomdark from the Abyss below it. The ambient magic of this realm makes it a dangerous, but valuable choice for mages. Indeed, in the Mythic Era, it was for the harnessing of this magic that the Mithral Empire build outposts down here, but the corruption of the realm would corrupt them into the Dark Elves. The Gloomdark is said to be the home of bizarre, alien creatures.
Localized Phenomena
The Underdark is full of twisting passages, very few of which have been charted by surface races. Explorers from outside the Underdark are easily at risk of becoming lost.
Strange magical effects, including wild magic, psychic effects, and demonic corruption, are common, especially in the deepest regions.
