Hino'ithal

The Hino'ithal, or 'Children of the Wind', are nomadic drow who live in the Aarasyl Desert. Originating in the Underdark, these drow have mastered the art of 'sailing' across the sand using specialized vehicles for wind-based transport and the stars for navigation. While typically travelling at night, they do trade during the day, using head wraps and specialized goggles to protect them from the sun.   Over five hundred years ago, the Underdark was invaded by something unknowable. Inky blackness, filled with aberrations and monsters never before seen, seemed to rise from the depths and devour any who stood in their way. The Duergar colonies, first to come into contact with the invasion and despite being caught off guard, were fierce to defend their homes. While ultimately unsuccessful, the Hino'ithal attribute their own survival, as well as the survival of Deep Gnomes, to the bravery of their dwarven neighbors. By the time the survivors made it to the surface, any who had stayed behind were lost.   Removed from their home and forced as strangers into a strange land, the citizens of the underdark were forced to adapt. While others made their way into dark forests or mountains, the drow decided to take what no one else on the continent had apparently wanted: the desert. With the knowledge of how underground rivers and lakes formed and flowed, they quickly made a home for themselves in the desert plateus near Renalia. Elaborate cave systems with water flowing through them were carved into the large stone bluffs, and it wasn't long before the community was thriving.   The fortune was short-lived, however. A natural disaster robbed the drow of their leaders, and the Achassi family stepped in as stewards until a more permanent solution could take place. The family was not interested in giving up control, however, and their corruption grew and became more concrete as they saught to control their people with the access to water. Quickly growing tired of the inbred and corrupt family, the rest of the drow soon left, opting to allow the family to rule an empty castle of water and riches. The family remained, growing more insular and cult-like, clinging to delusions of grandeur even as their empire turned to ash around them.   Once again without a home, the drow decided to embrace what the universe had given them more than once now. Learning the stars and creating ship-like vehicles that could glide across the sands with the wind, they began to 'sail' the sands of the Aarasyl desert, and the waters of the Azurali Sea beyond. With their knowledge of both finding water and locating openings into precious gem caves not controlled by the Marstoli Commonwealth
, their culture survived and became renowned as the desert dwelling 'Hino'ithal', or 'Children of the Wind'.
