Banded Desert

Desert in northeastern Throntru

written by Jack Kellum

Varicolored bands of gold, red, lavender, and even green, in vivid shades and hues, paint the rocky badlands of this desert in the north, west of the Whitestone Mountains . The colors are produced by minerals in the soil, like iron and copper, exposed by fierce winds that wear away the mesas. The swirling patterns of rainy weather that soak the Riverwoods and the Clearsky Plains are channeled away from the Banded Desert, leaving it mostly arid. The sole exception is the White River , which runs through the desert to the Glittering Gulf . The river is fed by mountain springs and snow melt, and it has carved deep canyons along much of its path.

Inhabitants

Many local cultures use adobe and pueblo architecture, building when possible atop a mesa or in a cliff face, while a few are nomadic, using portable dome-shaped tents. These peoples, like many in Throntru, are strongly matrilineal. They are also famed for their textiles, weaving brilliant cotton cloth in beautiful and evocative patterns of red, gold, black, and turquoise that mimic the colors of their land. In the northern part of the desert, an ancient petrified forest is now called the Forest of Stone .
