Additional Information
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Mafryn herring are an important food source for coastal Mörkel communities on the eastern Plain of Kings as well as for Ameders and Yrels inhabiting the eastern parts of Kanix Forest, though the two cultures prepare the fish in different ways. Mörkels variously boil the fish or add it into soups and stews, while the latter prefer smoked herring.
More recently, the people in the Mörkel kingdom of Áhalía have begun half-drying it by repeatedly freezing and thawing the fish during winter to give it a unique flavour, a method invented by the local Yrel community.
