The Forsaken

The Four Forsaken were true dragons who chose to consort with giants and from whom the nephilim were born. They were considered by their parents to be the greatest of traitors, and were hunted down and killed for their transgressions. Still they did not die without a fight, taking down many of their dragon brethren before they met their own ends. They are generally credited with sparking the Giant War, which saw the deaths of their partners and children as well.

Historical Basis

The Elder Dragons had their traitorous offsprings' names stricken from all records, and as such they are unknown to modern scholars. Instead they are referred to, awkwardly, as the "Four Forsaken" or individually based upon their giant partners' elemental affinities as the "Forsaken of Fire," "Forsaken of Water," "Forsaken of Earth," and "Forsaken of Air." As these names are inconvenient (presumably by intention), they are also known by the names of their weapons. The Forsaken of Fire is called "Oathbreaker," the Forsaken of Water is "Faithless," the Forsaken of Earth is "Giantsbane," and the Forsaken of Air is "Dragonslayer."

Spread

These characters are little but vague silhouettes of their former selves, with nearly all details of the lives, loves, and children wiped from memory. Still, few things can make a story persist like trying to stamp it out, and at least these names survive today. The idea that magicborn possess nephilim blood is widespread but not widely believed; still, writings from magicborn will occasionally cite this as the reason they have been mistreated by society or as justification for delusions of grandeur. Making any such claims in the presence of clergy is seen as potentially heretical, and one might find themselves in jail as a result. Doing so around a dragon is likely to evoke significantly worse results.
