Nephilim
Also known as "Accursed" or "Fallen Ones," Nephilim were the offspring of giants and a group of dragons who consorted with them, known only to time as the "Forsaken." These children were born with the elemental power of giants and arcane magic of dragons, potentially granting them the capacity to surpass even their parents. Naturally their mere presence proved to be an existential crisis for both races, providing the spark which ignited the Giant War. Both sides agreed the nephilim needed to be eradicated, and the possibility of more being born in the future could not be permitted as well. So it was that they first wiped out the Forsaken and their children, then set upon each other. When the dust settled the giants, dragons, and nephilim all laid dead, and the Elder Dragons were so depleted they were forced to assume humanoid forms for an age.
Today even discussing nephilim can be seen as heretical in some circles, and so it is important that this next section is viewed under the context of pure speculation and is not to be regarded as dogma nor fact. It is well established that magicborn individuals first arose during the Giant War. The general, modern consensus on the topic is that as giants' blood was spilled across the land, its elemental magic diffused throughout. Some of this magic worked its way into the sapient beings of the time, though whether it was through their food, water, or merely existing in its presence is unclear. However, an alternative hypothesis has been suggested, that the magicborn are instead the offspring of nephilim mixed with the other races of the Imperium. It posits that these accursed bloodlines still persist, though they are now so diffuse as to not appear every generation. Again this is speculation, not fact, but the rumor is pervasive enough that it likely contributes to the general air of mistrust many have around magicborn today.
