Personal history
Majima was born to a poor family in Tokyo. His father was an alcoholic and gambler, who his mother had married purely because she got pregnant during a brief relationship. His father was verbally and physically abusive to his wife and child, and when Majima was eight, his mother left to escape the abuse, leaving Majima behind.
He endured his father's abuse until he was 14, when he ran away from home, becoming homeless for several months. He eventually met and befriended Saejima Taiga, who invited him to live him him and his sister.
Saejima was already a chinpira with the Sasai family. Wanting to follow in his footsteps, Majima first tried to join the Sasai, who rejected him, and later swore to the Shimano Family. Shimano saw potention in him, paying for Utaboshi to do his irezumi, and making him a protege.
He and Saejima were tasked with carrying out a hit on the Patriarch of the Ueno Seiwa Clan, which was to be the first time either of them had ever taken a life. However, on the day of the hit, Majima was waylaid by Shimano's men, who revealed that the entire thing was a set up.
When Majima tried to leave to warn his kyodai, Shimano had his eye put out, and threw him into Anagura.
There, he endured brutal torture for a year, and longest any human had ever survived in the hole. He became fixated on the idea that Saejima should kill him for his 'betrayal', and his detirmination to be there when Saejima got out of prison was enough to keep him going through every terrible thing he was forced to suffer.
Eventually Shimano got sick of torturing him, and sent him to Shimano's kyodai Sagawa, an Omi officer in Sotenbori, Osaka. Sagawa promised he would be allowed to return to the Shimano family if he could repay a ¥100,000,000 'debt' abitrarily assigned to him. In order to do this, he was made manager of The Grand, a failing cabaret club.
Detirmined to be rejoin the family so that Saejima would know where to find him, Majima endured almost 3 years of slave labour and psychological abuse to turn The Grand into the most successful club in Sotenbori. However, just as he was about to pay off the debt, Sagawa raised the bar to ¥500,000,000.
Although he was prepared to keep working to the new goal, Sagawa offered him an alternative: to kill Makoto Makimura, who he was assured was a monster, a man trafficking women for sex, who had stepped on the Yakuza's toes.
Majima agreed to this new deal, but one investigation, he discovered that Sagawa had lied to him -- Makoto was actually a blind woman who had been a forced sex slave who managed to escape.
Imeditately identifying with her situation, Majima made the decision not to kill her, and to instead help her to escape the Kijin Clan who had also been ordered to kill her.
During this, he met Nishitani Homare, Patriarch of the Kijin Clan, who took an immediate liking to Majima, killing Sato Atsuko to get his attention, and calling the cops on himself just to get a chance to fight him. Although Majima and Nishitani's goals did not allign, Majima returned at least some of Nishitani's open attraction, admiring his commitment to doing whatever the hell he wanted without consideration for anyone else.
Seeing that Majima was committed to helping Makoto, and wanting Majima to be out from under Sagawa's thumb, Nishitani went as far as to 'die' for him, leaving Majima free to follow Makoto to Tokyo, escaping Sotenbori where Sagawa had kept him prisoner, knowing this might result in him losing his only chance to rejoin Shimano.
However, he was unable to prevent Makoto from being shot. Having learned Shimano had been pulling his strings from the start and had known Majima would never kill Makoto, and believing he had failed to save her, Majima snapped, going on a rampage through Dojima HQ, killing and brutalising everyone he encountered. He was only stopped from killing the Chairman by Sera, who revealed that Makoto had survived, and had given away the Empty Lot, meaning she was no longer in danger.
Sera asks Majima to kill Shimano, since he had been conspiring with the Omi. Majima accepted, going to Shimano's home. However, when it came to the killing blow, he hesitated, allowing Shimano to kill him.
Gender Identity
Majima was aware that he didn't always feel like 'man' was an appropriate description for him, but lacked the language to describe this, or opportunities to explore it.
Sexuality
Gay, and closetted. He would semi-regularly sleep with women, in order to protect his secret, and had no strong objections to this provided the women understood there would be nothing more serious between them, but he did not feel attraction to any of them.
Education
He dropped out of school at 14.
Employment
The only legitimate job he ever had was a brief stint as a waiter in a cocktail bar, although he lied about his age to get the job. Not long afterwards, he joined the Yakuza.
After a year in Anagura, he was given to Shimano Futoshi's kyodai Sagawa as a slave, and was made manager of The Grand, a Cabaret club in Sotenbori, to pay back the 'debt' Shimano had decided he owed. In his free time, in order to build up some personal funds, he also worked at Sunshine, a hostess club.
Failures & Embarrassments
He considered his failure to participate in the Uena Seiwa massacre, and Saejima's subsequent arrest and sentencing, to be a failure, even though he was stopped from attending by Shimano. He dedicated his life to getting back into the Shimano family purely so that Saejima would know where to find him when he got out, as Majima believed Saejima should and would kill him for his percieved 'betrayal'.
Mental Trauma
He was a survivor of parental abuse and extreme poverty. As a member of the Yakuza, he was required to remain closetted and witness large amounts of homophobia.
He was prevented from attending the planned Ueno Seiwa hit by his Oyaji's men, and when he tried to leave to warn his kyodai, his eye was put out for insolence. He was then sent to Anagura, where he endured a year of torture which was expected to kill him within weeks, surviving on his sheer detirmination that Saejima would be the one to kill him.
He was then functionally enslaved, suffering intense emotional and psychological abuse from his jailer. He was not sexually abused during this time, but Sagawa used the threat of it as part of his manipulation tactics.
Intellectual Characteristics
He was eccentric and somewhat scatterbrained, and probably had undiagnosed ADHD. He was smart, but lacked focus and education, and his impulsivity often lead him to make stupid decisions.
Morality & Philosophy
Despite being a Yakuza, Majima was fundamentally a good person, and was always willing to help people. He had never killed, and when ordered to kill Makoto Makimura, he instead risked everything to protect her.
He had a strong sense of honour, being fully willing to let his kyodai kill him for betraying him, even though he was forced into it.
Social
Family Ties
Majima had no relationship with his biological family after leaving him. He considered the Saejimas his true family.
Speech
After being relocated to Sotenbori, he opted a Kansai accent in order to help disguise his identity.
