Gnomes

Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names tend to be given to anyone joining the family group, either through marraige, adoption, or strangers accepted into the home. Gnomes will rarely if ever drop a family name, so it is not uncommon for gnomes to have two to four family names.    Family names indicate close relationships, and can serve as a shorthand to quickly trust new aquaintences. Gnomes first meeting will often try and find the shortest change of close friends between the two.

Shared customary codes and values

Authority

Gnomes in general tend to resist centralized authority. While not prone to outright rebellion, they will casually... ignore any authority they find irrelevant. It is difficult in gnomish society to keep any sort of authority where literally every person does not personally know, respect, and agree to trust the judgment of the leaders

Autonomy

Gnomes value a degree of autonomy. The ability to pick up and move with their family, to seek new adventures or achieve new goals, is cherished. Though this is not a common occurrence, gnomes will defend the right of individual gnomes to do so.

Community

Gnomes will often have a very good sense of the state of individuals in their community. It's considered good manners to quietly offer aide and help when someone is struggling, accepting what can be offered, or even refusing any payment. It is understood that if the community does not allow any one person to struggle alone, then the community as a whole benefits. It also means the community members do not need to fear struggling alone.
