The king's shady cover-up
The Conflict
Prelude
King Edon wanted to rebuild the catacombs/sewage system underneath Orebo. It was going to help the whole city evade big floods and make it a better place to live.
Edon was aware that there were people living secluded lives down there, the Denurians. But he needed them gone, otherwise the city was going to flood. He hired workers that could both rebuild the sewage system and take care of the residents there. They were working class citizens of Orebo, most of them desperate for a new job to take them to a better financial place. Many of them had families to feed.
At the start of the project the workers and the king thought that it would be easy to move the residents from underneath the city. But it quickly became clear that they would not move even a single inch. This was their home and holy place, and no one was going to take it away from them, not before they had the chance to defend themselves. The king ordered the workers to fight back, there was no chance to oppose him or leak information on the situation, or else you would lose your job, risk being exiled or even arrested. He gave them resources to defeat the Denurians, and after a couple of weeks, there were no remaining Denurians to fight back. The work could be resumed.
The workers became resentful of the king, being forced to kill people that had done nothing wrong. During their time underground, they collected remnants of the culture and gathered them in their own homes, saving them for a better time. The group became closer and closer, forming a network of almost rebels. They worked in silence to gather resources and information that they could use to expose the king before his people.
Finally the sewage system/catacombs were finished and the people of Orebo were happy, unknowing of the tragedy that had played out underneath their feet. The workers were exhausted and bitter, but felt the time had come to unveil the king's little secret. They planned out an action to bring the Denurians' remnants and barge into the big museum and the newspaper and explain the whole situation, but someone close to the king had discovered the plan and ratted them out. Before most of the "rebels" could act, the royal guard were on their heels.
Deployment
The royal guard were sent out into the city, searching for the workers in their known hideouts and combing through the city. Posters of these "traitors" were posted on walls and notice boards, so that civilians could help in the hunt.
The rebels helped each other to stay hidden, sending messages and planning traps for the guards. Most of the rebels didn't want to hurt the guards too much, they wanted to leave the killing behind, but a few wanted revenge and killed as many guards as they could.

The Engagement
Outcome
The king could stop the secret about the catacombs and emerged victorious against the traitors. The sewage system was praised and saved the city from the flood that came shortly after the conflict.
Many families were shattered and destroyed after the "purge". There was a spike of kids who arrived at the Academy, many orphans and kids whose parent/s could not take care of them anymore.
Aftermath
In some corners of Orebo, the king's reputation was forever tainted. No matter what good he did for the city, people would still resent him for what he did to their families.
The culture he eradicated was forever lost. Denurians would not be known until Devian, king Edon's son who took the throne after him, collected the items that the workers had saved before the purge, and put them in the museum. Their true demise would still be unknown for everyone but a few people, but their existance would at least not be forgotten.
