Blood Crystals
Blood crystals are a type of mineral used to create a drug. The drug maximizes a vampires' hunger while keeping their emotions at bay. Those who take too much of the drug can end up overdosing, which leads to them act like a starved feral animal in search of blood. This drug has been outlawed in the Itude Empire for almost eighty years, making it a sought-after drug by the illicit network chains of the blood bars.
A massive patch of this mineral was found growing inside a small underwater cavern with a large air reserve near the Blood Moon Lake in the Storms Reach Region. This was during the month of Sroqo of the year 1927 EoL. Those who found it brought it to some scientists to figure out what they were dealing with. Upon seeing the initial effects this mineral possessed, they allowed for it to be created into the blood crystal drug.
The drug instantly became a massive hit with the vampires, spreading throughout the empire like an untamable virus. This led to the very first case on Biwid 35th of 1930 EoL. To those who heard of the case, it was dismissed as if the vampire, who was experiencing this condition, was merely faking it for attention.
As the years passed and new cases emerged, it was apparent that blood crystals were indeed causing dangerous problems. The main case of blood crystals was overdosing, which led to the Human Massacre of 1938 EoL, where a bunch of vampires entered a state similar to fame*. In this state, those effected killed many human citizens for their blood, littering the streets with their bodies. Resulting from the massacre, Emperor Vlad banned the use of blood crystals in the empire. Although, there are still cases that occur, most going unreported.
*Fame is the result of a vampire not eating for three days straight. This causes them to go into an animalistic frenzy where all they crave is blood and will do just about anything to get it.

These definitely sound dangerous - I'm glad the drug created from them was outlawed. I like that they were found in an underwater cavern.
That location has specific importance in the future of the series...
