Old World

The Old World is a large continent on the west side of the planet. It is located on the Equator and is surrounded by two seas: Phadoya Sea in the east, and Kinjora Sea in the west. Unlike the other two continents, the Old World is a vast archipelago with no mainland. It used to be a whole continent, but the land was shattered during the Sentinel War and destroyed in the Ice Age.   The Old World is quite isolated from the rest of the world and is also internally isolated. Many nations do not trade with each other. In fact, it is likely they do not know these other nations exist, since the Sentinel War, and the ensuing Ice Age destroyed many civilisations and forced the remainder to turn inwards. As a result of this isolation, most species do not intermix or have mixed-species children.

Regions

The Old World is an archipelago split into 4 main regions and multiple smaller islands. The “main archipelago” is considered the southern part of the continent, where the Orcs and the Natuzans live. Each region has a name that was given to it by travellers (mainly) from the Known World, but the inhabitants themselves don’t use those names. They have their own names for their region, and these names are used widely across the Old World.

Nazuteca (The Floating Isles)

Nazuteca, or the Floating Isles, is currently inhabited by the Natuzans. They settled upon it when they migrated south to escape the droughts that caused famines. Nazuteca is the small floating archipelago north of Kupesh. The region has 6 islands, each corresponding to one Element, although some subregions have more than one island.   Nazuteca is known for its strong Elemental energy, which made it a good home for the Elemental Natuzans. This energy also powers the material underneath all the islands, which allows them to float as high as they do.   The Natuzans are the only humanoids on the islands. Many don’t even realise they exist because they prefer to stay in the sky, where they feel safer. In fact, no-one is allowed out of Nazuteca and very few are allowed in.

Kupesh (The Shattered Lands)

Kupesh (or the Shattered Lands) is the group of islands below Nazuteca. They are inhabited by the Orcs and are most people’s first point of contact with the Old World. The region is further split in two parts, the Outer Islands and the Inner Islands.   The Outer Islands comprises multiple smaller islands that surround the Inner Islands. The soil there is dried up so most plants cannot grow on the soil and there’s often a lack of food. Some smaller animals roam the area, but they are quite aggressive as a result of having to fight other species for the limited selection of food. There are a few outposts in the area, but those are mainly from travellers trying to survive while mapping a route to the Inner Islands.   The Inner Islands are where the Orcs live and is covered in a thick rainforest known locally as Andalesh. In contrast to the Outer Islands, the Inner Islands are much bigger and contain all the large villages. The Inner Islands can get very hot and humid, and the air is often thick. There are also many Spirits in the region because of the strong Arcanic presence there.

Yositan (The Sunlit Horizon)

Yositan (or the Sunlit Horizon) is the large archipelago north of Nazuteca. It sits on the Equator, so can get extraordinarily hot. Because of this, the region experiences frequent droughts and famines are not uncommon. The southern islands fare better, because they are tropical and have beaches. On the other hand, the northern islands have deserts. Unlike the Red Desert, these deserts are drier and more arid.   In between the two areas, there is a large island with a savannah on it. The savannah has the largest amount of animals in the region, and they can often be seen grazing on the grass. The savannah, and the Sunlit Horizon in general, has some of the more unique animals that cannot be found elsewhere.   The Kozoni and the Settlers are the only humanoids in Yositan. The Kozoni have many subcultures within them while the Settlers prefer to remain hidden. As Yositan is further away from the main archipelago, Kozoni prefer to trade within their ethnic groups. A few times a year, they will also trade with people outside their region, mainly the Natuzans.

Maridago (The Underseas)

Maridago is a subterranean place deep in the water. The entire region spans across two oceans, Phadoya Sea and Old World Sea. In terms of size, Maridago is the largest region in the Old World. Some do not consider it part of the Old World and often say it is its own continent or biome. But many of its inhabitants would consider themselves Phadoyan.   There are two humanoid species that live in Maridago - the Marida and the Sonatla. They are both semi-aquatic, but only the Marida come onto land to talk and trade with the rest of the world. Both species are the most distant from the rest of Dankar, but that is because they spend most of their lives underwater.   Maridago is also home to a large population of Oceanids. They are Water Fairies affiliated with the Hydro Dragon, the prime Oceanid himself. Because of the Oceanids, Maridago is often considered the domain of the Hydro Dragon.

Language

The Old World does not have a common language, but many languages are mutually intelligible as a result of many people travelling within the continent during the Age of Triumph. A long time ago, they used to have one language, Phadoyan, but that branched off into the modern languages of the Old World seen today.   People of the Old World (collectively called Phadoyans) can also understand the common language of the Known World, Known Basic. In the past, the Old World was connected to the Known World and was part of a supercontinent called Phadoya, and they once shared the Phadoyan language. As Known Basic is the lingua franca of the Known World and a major language in the New World, Phadoyans are not isolated in terms of language, and can pick up Known Basic to communicate with the rest of the world.   There are about a hundred living languages on the continent. Some of these include dialects so distinct from their parent languages that they are considered their own. But each region has its own major language used to communicate with the world.
