Document on Fire

The financial collapse of Jason Garamund's family business, the Seasway Resort Hotel Resort Hotel Resort and their underground bank, occurred during the Six Year War. Lenny Garamund's friend arrived to assist in saving the hotel and resort from financial trouble. Frank Day was a known grifter who worked from the backrooms of bars in South Soffit and Spouter’s T’s Tavern. He excelled at creating counterfeit money and documents. He was prepared to handle the hotel's finances for a fair fee and any future favors he may require from the owners.

Policy Whereabouts

In this situation, the Garamund family had already sought the bankruptcy option offered by Primacy to its well-known residents and merchants. They would permit the hotel to keep running in exchange for a bond loan with an exorbitant interest rate. The hotel regularly hosted the premier officers of the Primacy, Periphery, and Ascendancy, providing private accommodations for their desired sights and experiences.   Jason Garamund, Lenny's respectable brother and Crooked Mile Circle founder did have a repute to care about. He felt guilty about the insurance fraud he committed to save the Hotel from bandruptcy. He invested every bit of his proceeds into the Hotel and Resort, only to see it fail before the Six Year War was over. He never confessed to his late wife Cathaleen about where he came up with money to rescue the family business.   He hid the bogus document in his Crooked Mile Manor House. The Cabinet could be unlocked with an ancient key and locking mechanism Cathaleen dug up on Cirsea Isle. She did not include it's use information in her book. Jason wasn't sure if there were any unique properties used to forge the mechanism, but he found it worked properly to safekeep his important papers and grimoires.

Purpose

Frank Day and the Garamund Brothers created an insurance policy that needed signatures for legitimacy. Frank Day was successful in making money back then. Lenny Garamund spent his earnings recklessly while Jason Garamund saved the Hotel from financial collapse, only to lose it in three weeks of bombings. The act of setting fire to the ruins didn't appear excessively criminal. Just like other Fairelands residents, he would have gotten bond money at a low interest rate, but his immediate need for funds made things complicated after committing to a scheme.

  • An outdoor chimney and fireplace is blasted and left in a pile of miscellaneous debris.
  • Doors and windows were blown out.
  • Surrounding area is clear of ignition fluids and gasoline cans, but there is evidence that lightening stuck in the exact required to start a mammoth fire.

Caveats

Jason was not informed by Cathaleen Garamund about the possibility of disrupting the rotating wheel lock and key by inserting false documents into the cabinet. She performed just three experiments.

Test 1. She secured the lock and key to a chest containing 1093 BCE pirate doubloons and a pearl necklace. The doubloons remained unaffected despite being locked in the chest, but the fake pearl necklace disintegrated.
Test 2. For the second test, Cathaleen cobbled into her boot a love letter from her groom, Jason. By using the lock and key mechanism, she adorned the zipper and exposed the boot to the worst rain. While the boot absorbed the moisture, the letter stayed dry. She was satisfied to find that the ink didn't run either.

Test 3. The last test outcome did not produce the expected results. Adapting the lock and key for the narrow boat armoire appeared effective, but a poisonous ash-gray blister beetle ruined it and bit her after three weeks. She saved her own life with an immediate response. She treated the bite with mineral oil, IV fluid therapy, activated charcoal, and an anesthetic. The document she found and used for the experiment was Lenny Garamund’s Fire Insurance policy. To avoid upsetting her husband, she destroyed the letter and killed the beetle.

Legal status

The insurance policy contract is deemed illegal. The intention was to submit it, after a fire destroyed the resort building with the indoor mineral springs. But the fire never came about. It was not easy to locate an arsonist during the war. They were occupied with battling for the Ascendancy or carrying out counter militia fires for the spies and Otherwhere anarchists who infiltrated Fairelands through illegal ports.   Frank Day's idea to forge signatures for an inspector's addendum initially relieved Jason Garamund. The family is not obligated to involve any more criminals in their plan. Zero risk of secret conversation breaches and no extra expenses. Frank can be easily persuaded with money. Despite submitting the document to the bank and obtaining his share, Frank persisted in blackmailing the Garamunds. Two years later, he began his plan to take Jason’s land in Crooked Mile or scourge or Jason’s reputation.   Frank disappeared two days before Jason moved into his new home, thinking his troubles were finally done. The original policy was kept securely in his locked cabinet. Except it was not. Instead, a note that led Jason to believe a friend had done him a favor and left the proof in Muriel’s garden. Frank, according to the note, was dead. The consequences of his misdemeanor crime had transformed into a murder conspiracy that haunted him. Did Lenny play a role in this?
