Suneaters Organization in Covenant | World Anvil

Suneaters

Mir almost felt bad, but it was buried beneath the thrill of battle. The Tyxlan fleet wasn't even trying to keep formation, every member engaged in a bloodlust frenzy. According to the council, loss of their sacred Torch had lead to this. Like a rabid Slunk, devouring itself as it lost its mind. he Tyxlans had sealed their fate when the first of their ships started stalking the Deyan shipping lanes. Whether it was state sponsored or not, the affront could not go unanswered.   Mir closed his mind to the lightfield that let him view the battle as if he stood on the hull of his Ray. He didn't have time to ponder their fate. The other Suneater Rays were in position, concentric circles around the sun. As soon as they had started harnessing the celestial bodies power, the enemy fleet was doomed. Flares of death whipped across space, tear the Tyxlan battlecruisers in half, leaving a trail of flailing crew like blood in water. They rained death upon them idlely until he took his place at the focii.   With the lens complete, they wasted no time in focusing the energy down the chain. He felt the rush of the power through his mind, the ship rumbled as it compensated for the heat of the event. It took a moment before they could see the impact, a wave of fire and doom spreading out across the surface of Tyxlan. The enemy fleet halted action, some floating mindlessly while they watched the apocalpyse of their homeworld, some turning tail and fleeing. The beam swept through space blasting the rest of them into debris.   It was anticlimatic. Mir had heard once the Eye of God turned a gas giant into a second sun. He wished he had been there for that.   This should keep the peace, he mused, until it faded from memory and the Deyan would have to make an example of some other poor fools.   Only Light, nothing less.

The Suneaters are an autonomous branch of the Deyan, tasked with surgically eliminating threats to the Deyan homeworld. They are also rumored to internally police the various Deyan castes and clans for corruption that may threaten the safety of their people.

    Assets

The Suneaters always number nineteen.   Each are granted their own Ray, a small yet potent warship. Each of these ships are more than capable of engaging with an entire enemy fleet, able to store and release vast amounts of energy with pinpoint accuracy in battle. The Rays are able to maneuver at near light speed, and fold darkmatter for longer instatenous travel. They only require a single Suneater to crew, with a entangled photon mind entity handling auxiliary functions at the speed of thought. The same system allows for faster than light communications between the vessels. With sufficient relay ships set up, it can also allow instantaneous communication with the homeworld.   The most feared ability of the Suneaters is to coordinate their Rays in a pattern called 'The Eye of God'. Forming a lens over a star via overlapping energy fields and focusing its power into a devistating weapon capable of incinerating entire planets. It requires all nineteen Suneaters to perform.

    History

The Suneaters were formed when the first Deyan encountered the first sentient alien. Several crewmembers were lost in the interaction, not through violence but by cultural contamination that couldn't be allowed to return to Deya. At this point it was obvious that Deyan purity was vulnerable and measures needed to be taken.   The first Sun Eater was Mir Ganat. Despite only having a retrofitted exploration ship for a Ray, he was able to repel the alien fleet seeking revenge for the loss of their first contact crew. Not a single alien ship made it to the Deyan homeworld. He died as his ship fell helplessly into the sun, having spent the last of its light to destroy the last enemy ship. His last transmitted words were 'Only light, nothing less'   All Sun Eaters aspire to embody these words.

    Only light, nothing less
