Geography
Deya is tidally locked, historically keeping one side in eternal day and one in eternal night. Technological breakthroughs allowed the Deyans to bend sunlight around the planet, bringing the entire planet into constant daylight and expanding the habitable zones on the planet for their growing population.
There have been reports of ecological issues surrounding the loss of "shadow life" but there isn't significant scholarship to say one way or another.
Deya orbits a binary star.
History
Active scholarship dates back 10,000 years - the Deyans are fiercely proud of their long history of academia and families covet their particular branch of study. Lightbenders, credited with "ending the shadowspawn" are at the forefront of industry and intellectual life. Most scholars consider the Shadowspawn a mythic approach to the idea of balance - that light requires shadow, that activity requires rest.
A small, determined band of scholars believe that the shadow life has been actively suppressed and will reassert itself either in individual powers or in a shift to the current abilities of lightbenders. While mainstream scholar families have dismissed the theory, they have been watchful of their children and have accelerated the lightbending instruction for their young gifted scions.
Tourism
Tourism is tightly regulated and controlled through the dept for academics. All visitors are through the universities.
