The Faceless Fae Species in Corive | World Anvil

The Faceless Fae

"The Faceless are a pleasant folk, unless you take their masks. There are stories of them helping those who are lost in the woods, or in aiding in the wars. But their musical speech is light and cheery, but if their mask is stolen, they will eat your face."
"That's a joke, right?"
"We wear our masks for a reason, Grass-lander."

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Faceless look like mobile bits of wood with leaf-crafted masks.
Show Spoiler
If their masks are stolen, they grow in size and reveal a pit where the mask used to be. The pit latches onto their victim's face and as thef ace is eaten, the Faceless grows in size.

Genetics and Reproduction

According to legends, the Faceless follow an Elder who spreads seeds across the winds, and if the seeds land in a deep forest, a Faceless community may grow around the Elder's Sapling. The Faceless are generally less willing to confirm or deny the legend.

Growth Rate & Stages

The Faceless seem to live at least as long as the average Elf, and may live for longer.
Those who lose their faces and then find their mask wilt away and die while mourning their mask for no longer fitting them as Weeping Trees . If they do not find their old face, they wander, growing into great nightmarish trees that must be burned to save the rest of the forest.

Ecology and Habitats

The Faceless live in the deepest parts of the forests they've built communities within. They rarely alter where they live, and instead seem to "find" a place for themselves.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Faceless seem to survive off light and warmth of the day, and soil at night.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The Faceless seem to have no formal structure outside of supporting the Elder, though the existence of the Elder is debatable.

Average Intelligence

"The Faceless seem to enjoy music and artistic performances, adding their own touches when a performance is near them. The Forest Elves seem amused by efforts to record just how smart these wood-folk are, especially when our records keep going missing."
— Tormian University Researcher's journal

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The Faceless seem as sensitive to light, physical sensation, sounds, as any cultured being. The Faceless seem to be more plant-like when warmed and in bright natural light, but will wilt if they're under too much warmth and light.
Average Physique
The Faceless vary as individuals in how they appear, but all appear to be some kind of tree people.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Their mask-faces have markings that pattern to be like a face, but overall the Faceless look to be made of varying trees. Show Spoiler
Those without their masks turn, if they already weren't, to mimic the dark wood of rotting wood.
