Skoldstad Ruins
Mathias, you remember these ruins. You used to use the half-walls and crumbling roofless houses with your sisters, your parents, and your cousins as mock battle grounds. There's the tree Katril used her training axe on when you'd duck under her strike instead. It was the last time the two of you would train like that in these ruins.
Skoldstad has some ruins of abandoned homes and farms, mostly lost to landslides or surprise avalanches.
While the ruins had gone unrepaired, they were repurposed for training purposes for young adults looking for a career as mercenaries, soldiers, or guards. The trees and rubble became an obstacle course and mock battleground using the assumption ruins would be excellent bases of operations for bandits to work from, or as camps to use while on a march.
ShackNeedsName
This particular shack is all remaining of a horse-barn, though some of the grasses used to make hay has managed to survive and create a small protected field among wild shrubs and ferns. Small trees have begun to grow around the shack. Periodically someone uncovers shoe nails in the remains of buildings nearby. It is generally agreed in town folklore that the stablehand had left the door open and sent the horses fleeing down the mountains to try and outrun the slide of rock and snow.
History
The ruins were one the higher elevation part of Skoldstad, the side of town supporting mining operations. The mines no longer use that part of the town, preferring to shut down for the winter, and most miners have living arrangements within the mines during the summer.
There have been rumors the mines once supported some older structures, but those structures had been lost to Nature.
I like the idea that the ruins are used as a sort of training ground. That's a really good use for them! :D
