The Battle of Beton

The Battle of Beton was a small conflict that escalated from a Danen raid upon the town of Beton in the year 4345.

The Conflict

Prelude

The Town of Beton was a small village upon the outskirts of the High Kingdom of Albion. It became a prime target to the Sons of Ormulf, who saw it was rich in plunder. They thus sent their ships up the Silver River and travelled through the night in the forests. They took the village by surprise.

Deployment

As the Sons of Ormulf set fire to the fields, the town of Beton was taken by surprise. Uhtric Godwineson, a warrior in the village, quickly started an evacuation effort. There were not many warriors in the village; Uhtric only found a handful of men (and women) to side with him to defend against the Danens, including a dwarf blacksmith named Olof, an bar maid named Aethelflaed, and a Keller warrior named Eogun MacOncett, and two other warriors. He was also joined by Nilrem, a druid from the forests of Kirk and the lands of Gotha.

Battlefield

The battlefield was the town itself. The Danen forces set fire to the houses and fields. Uhtric and his companions used the familiar landscape to their advantage, hiding within houses to sneak up on the Danens.

The Engagement

Uhtric and his companions faced the regiment of Danen and managed to slay 20 men, and lost two of the companions. During the battle, Eogun, Nilrem, and Olof focused on handling the small regiments, Aethelflaed began to snipe Danen men from the ruins of houses, and Uhtric confronted the commander of the army, Harald the Horrible. Uhtric put up a fight against the viking, but ultimately was defeated, and his left hand scarred from the conflict. Harald let Uhtric live, believing him to be a fine warrior, and offered Uhtric to join his side. Uhtric refused, so Harald vowed that if he saw him again, he would kill him.
The Danen escaped with their plunder, and Beton was left to ruins. However, after the war, Uhtrid and his companions rebuilt the town, leading to Uhtrid becoming the first new earl of the town.
