St. Lanceler

Sir Lanceler

St. Lanceler of Orwood was a canonized saint of the Church of Amagus and a legendary knight. He was known for his slaying of a Green Dragon to protect Orwood.

History

Though much is not known of Lanceler in his life, some of the legends have been compiled and canonized by the Church of Amagus in order to preserve his history. This record will also mention some of the deuterocanonical and events attributed to him as well.

Canon

Historically, Lanceler would be born on the First Age year of 4836 in the city of Orwood. In the year 4856 he would finish his training as a squire and was placed in protection of an abbey about a mile away from the city, where he would study monastic teachings of Amagus.   Then, in the year 4859 the city of Orwood would be attacked by a Green Dragon that came from the woods nearby. The city was terrorized by the dragon, who ate their sheep and even the citizens. Many were not brave enough to face the dragon. Word came to the abbey, and Lanceler immediately armed himself. He rode to Orwood and faced the dragon.   Taking his greatsword, Lanceler braved the monster and fought off the creature while guards attacked it. Then, in a swift stroke, he beheaded the creature by slashing at it's neck. Lancelot would be lifted up by the town for his bravery and honored. He would lead an effort to rebuild the town and was knighted by the chief of the city for his effort. After many years later, he would die in 4901 in the comfort of his home.

Deuterocanonical

The 'second canon' for this saint involves two tales of miracles he supposedly pulled of. Do note, while many clerics of Amagus consider these tales true, historically they are nothing but myth, even to the Church of Amagus. So take discretion when you read them, for they are just legend.   The first of these miracles involved his cleansing of a poisoned well in Orwood. The tale states that an older Lanceler encountered a fiendish man, sympathetic to the dragons, who placed poison into the city's water supply. Many got sick. However, Lanceler managed to use the divine power of Amagus to remove the poison and heal the city's sick. He would then capture the poisoner and execute him.   The second miracle involves the story of a mother who had died in the middle of a birth. The father was worried that his child would also die. Thus, Lanceler was summoned and overlooked the mother. He whispered into her ear, and the child was able to be delivered from her, alive and well.

Morality & Philosophy

Lanceler after his death managed to write only one memoir, My Tyme, where we get his tale of the slaying of the dragon, that also discussed some of his theology on Amagus. In My Tyme, he mentioned that all men are subjected to the "lawful nature" of morality and chose to either accept it or follow their own ambition and lead to destruction. In his point of view, chaos was not the way of life like the Elves claimed, but that the universe ran in patterns. Therefore, there was no true coincidence; everything had a distinct purpose.
