Dragonslayer

Dragonslayer, also known as the Sword of St. Lanceler, was an enchanted greatsword of historical significance to Orwood, Lysandus. It has been long sought after by adventurers, but it continues to be lost for centuries.

History and Myth

Before Dragonslayer was gifted to St. Lanceler, legend says it was created by the mysterious Lady of the Lake. The story goes that a worthy warrior once came to her, desperate for a weapon for revenge on a dragon after it murdered his family. The Lady of the Lake thus kissed his blade and told him to "go forth". He would soon slay many dragons with the blade, until it would be lost for a millennia afterword.   It would be picked up by St. Lanceler, who once again had to fend a city from a dragon. Lanceler used the power of this blade to kill the terrifying Menlek the Green, an adult green dragon, that attacked Orwood. He sliced the creature's head off with one stroke. Thus, the blade became attached to his name as "The Sword of St. Lanceler". After Lanceler's death in 4901, the sword once again would be lost.   Theories about the sword have been presented. Firstly, there are theories that multiple Dragonslayers exist. This is evidenced by the classical bard tale of Yorick the Wanderer who gets a shortsword also called "Dragonslayer" with properties very similar to it. It would not be surprising that different blades, given by the Lady of the Lake, have occasionally had such a property. The second theory is that the sword is not a single object. Rather, it is the result of a normal blade gaining and then losing the enchantment. This would explain why these swords are not easy to come across.   Unfortunately, the original and any subsequent copies of Dragonslayer are lost. It has become the habit of some adventuring parties to try and find the original. Most of these expeditions fail, even when trying to loot graves, dwarven catacombs, dungeons, and other mysterious and magical places. It is most likely the sword is completely lost to history. A fact the mythical and mysterious Lady of the Lake enjoys.   In the year 5689, however, the hero Wulfric Dragonbane would be gifted the greatsword Saint Lanceler carried and used the sword against the Knights of Black Dragon. Him and the rest of the Dragonblazers vanquished the dragon Qenlynn Millerstone with it, bringing peace to Lysandus for ages to come.

Significance

This blade is part of Keller legend, though some have begun to think it is nothing but myth. Chroniclers at the Bard College of Ebenwald believe that Lanceler himself was the power behind the blade, not the other way around. A normal greatsword used to kill a dragon is bound to find some historical significance after all!
