Cemedri Magicus: College of the Magical Arts

"They say her fires, stirred by a wizard's power / can protect their study, their mystic tower." -Verse from the Wizards of the Earth.
Cemedri Magicus was a Mage College specializing in Abjuration and Evocation that rested to the mountainside of the volcano Mt. Magus. It is known for it's prolific experimentation of components and being one of the only locations in Lysandus for studying the arcane arts.

Purpose / Function

Cemedri Magicus primarily serves as a college for aspiring wizards to study the arcane arts and become masters of spellcasting for Evocation and Abjuration. They manage to get hundreds of applications each year, with only a few dozen ever being accepted due to high expectations for students.   It's secondary task, however, is collecting and experimenting on components. One of the most sought after components, Moonstone, proves to keep showing up on the mystical mountaintop. The wizards use any expendable moonstone they find on the mountain to create new spells. They also like to use transmutation to change the stone into other materials if they desire.   Finally, the college serves as a strategic military location due to it's mountainside and location near two cities, Miweck and Wewich. It protects them with long-range spells from master wizards. It's location near Miweck gives it access to the Silver River, allowing faster transportation of wizards to core cities, including Ebenwald. Also, many aspiring soldiers study at this college to become court wizards or battlemages for the army. It is extremely hard to invade; the mountainside has changed roughly because of wizard experimentation making it impossible for legions of soldiers to destroy it. Thus, it has become a military citadel in it's own right.

Alterations

When it was first started, only the small walls around the place were created. When the Cemedri Magicus wizards arrived they started to build the towers around it. Due to magical practicing, the landscape has been altered severely from it's original form. Now, it is more rugged and jolting, the terrain not being easy to traverse.

Architecture

The structure appears to be very medieval in it's design, having tall towers in a small area for maximum security and sight over the mountainside. It is primarily made of stone and bricks, leaving it insulated from the heat outside. Magical artifacts keep it cool on the inside of the building. Walls surround the tower as well as flying buttresses to keep it secure.   The fortress itself is protected by an invisible barrier, protecting it from the destructive lava that calls itself it's own home. A central chunk of moonstone is warded to keep this abjuration barrier up, guarded by plenty of anti-magic fields and a glass dome.

History

Cemedri Magicus was first a small fortification to collect the components from Mt. Magus' mysterious arrival and eruption in 1A 4100 that took place. Primarily, it collected salt, coal, and other minerals. The most important mineral, however, was Moonstone. This attracted wizards to come to this place to get some for themselves.   Eventually, the wizards began to share magical secrets there and slowly took over the fortification for themselves as they continued to experiment with the strange components they uncovered. As the fortification attracted students trying to understand magic for themselves, it grew into a Mage College. It was named after the small group of wizards who first gathered around the mountainside, collectively calling themselves "Cemedri Magicus", which meant "Magicians of Cement" in Celestial. Thus, in 1A 4172, it was an established institution.   Though the college has faced ages of conquest, it never did fall to any enemy invaders. Cemedri Magicus continues to be a prolific college for studying components and experimentation.
