Soza Castle

A mass of towers curved around a central hive-like castle dome. The western face clung to the cliffs of the mountainside and the eastern face hung over the edge of a deep crater lake called Sozan Dema. Weblike tethers held the eastern face to the cliff face. Flowering vines crept up the sides of the towers. The early evening setting sun slanted blue shadows across pink-tinted surfaces. From a mile away, it looked like a fairy castle in the sunset.

Upon approach, massive double doors creaked open with the clatter of chains and a whistle of steam in the distance. Inside the half-moon entry, the castle denizens lined up to greet their guests. From the smallest, wriggling kitten-like babe to the most wrinkled and wizened elder, they stood with barely bottled excitement.

History

Tribal divisions and conflicts sent the Soza ancestors into the mountains, the least desirous lands on the continent. The mountains were a harsh haven, rough and wild. It took industrious and inventive pioneers to build a home near the summit. In recent decades, the Soza mines and forges have led to the expansion of trade through steam power, railroads, and construction.

Tourism

High in the central mountains, tourism to Soza Castle came mostly in the autumn with the Festival of Black, though architects and inventors sometimes make the climb to learn from the castle and its industrious family.
