Trogites

Trogites are a bipedal reptile and amphibian species that live primarily in Trogdia, the country to the east of Wheatstar Crater.

A large part of Trogdia is hidden inside Cryptara Swamp in the north and central parts of the country. To the south lie settlements such as Geko Town and Lake Glenn. Finally, Old Cryptara and Mount Bakker Volcano reside on The Saurid Covenant to the north of the main continent.
Cryptara Swamp is home to The Hidden Kingdom, a mysterious empire that only has one public settlement accessible to outsiders. Beyond the facade of the fortress at the edge of Lake Glenn, not much is known about the ways and culture of The Hidden Kingdom. During the Schism Wars and cultural revolution 1000 years ago, The Hidden Kingdom split from the original capital of Trogdia, Old Cryptara, and retreated within Cryptara Swamp. While there are free settlements in South Trogdia, the threat of civil war is every present.
The Hidden Kingdom is known for capturing and enslaving non-trogites and especially Kanids, with whom they have old grudges the reasons for which are lost. There are frequent reports of Cryptaran ambushes and attacks in the mountainous region at the north border between Trogdia and Doriaa. While the protection of the swamp has kept Cryptaran culture a secret, their acts of violence and subjugation have left an indelible mark over hundreds of years.
One major ally of Old Cryptara is The Saurid Covenant (Saurids), an ethnic group of Trogites that live in a fortress atop Mount Bakker, a tropical and warm location in an otherwise frozen mountain range that would otherwise be poorly habitable for Trogites.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Trogites are bipedal humanoids with the features of Amphibians, Reptiles, and Dinosaurs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Trogites, depending on the particular group, have communal practices relating to reproduction and childcare. Trogites are born from eggs that are frequently located in a guarded or reinforced structure where they are cared for by professionals or the community, depending on the particular traditions of that group.

Growth Rate & Stages

After the egg stage, Trogites grow until about the age of 26, and after that are considered full adults.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Trogites tend to have shamanistic leadership in their settlements, relying on those who have deep knowledge to lead. While some have more religious or metaphysical shamans, a leader could just as easily be someone like Farrah Geko who leads Geko Town because of her knowledge of Vertbikes and racing. A Trogite "Shaman" is more of an expert who can train apprentices and pass on what is culturally important to a particular group.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Trogites have Chromatic and Mystic potential like any species in Izan, but Trogites in particular are more likely to use grimoires, technology, and mathematics to manipulate Luma and Umbra rather than innate potential or physical training.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Trogite names are often based on plants, geology, and scientific names for amphibians, reptiles, and dinosauria.

Major Organizations

Farrah Verticycles - Located in Geko Town, Farrah Verticycles is the creation of Farrah Geko. Farrah Geko is a famous racer, inventor of the Verticycle, mayor of Geko Town, and an inspiration to Free Trogites everywhere.
The Hidden Kingdom - The secretive empire and military of Cryptara Swamp.
The Saurid Covenant - A similarly secretive group of Free Trogites that live in the tropical warm zone of Mount Bakker, shielding them from the dangerous cold of the Rift Island Mountain Range.

Gender Ideals

Trogites have a non-binary understanding of gender, much how some amphibians and reptiles have the ability to change their sex in real life. Although many Trogites choose a particular gender before the age of 20, they may stay non-binary or change later in life.

Average Technological Level

Trogites have a level of technology that can sometimes be confusing. While they have access to computers, firearms, and qwarzoids, and a Trogite invented the Verticycle and pioneered early racing leagues, the isolating effect of Cryptara swamp has slowed the spread of technological advancements. As a result, you are likely to see medieval style knights errant riding on motorcycles, submarine crews with chromatic blades and halberds, and wizards with electronic grimoires that help them cast spells.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Most Trogites speak Common Isanti, but the Hidden Kingdom has their own ancient, secret language used for rituals, festivals, religious ceremonies, and magical spells simply called "Hidden Runic".

Common Etiquette Rules

Trogite culture is focused on honor, service, and respect.
One form of this respect is expressed in the Trogite Salute, which involves placing the fist over the sternum and nodding or bowing in a fashion dependent on the level of respect due to the recipient.
1 - An upturned chin with a curt nod indicates the highest level of respect toward an equal.
2 - A bowed head with the eyes downturned indicates respect toward someone who is at a higher status.
3 - A bow at the waist is indicative of respect in the military, but can be interpreted as sarcastic or insincere outside of The Hidden Kingdom.
4 - An exaggerated bow without the fist over the sternum indicates deep disrespect for the other person, especially among Free Trogites.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Trogite relations with the rest of the world are strained due to the influence of The Hidden Kingdom, particularly among Kanids who are more frequently captured and enslaved by the Hidden Kingdom than other species.
Free Trogites are often met with distrust or bigotry in other parts of the world due to the Kingdom's reputation for violence, subjugation, and secrecy. This can often bubble over into discrimination, disenfranchisement, and outright conflict, especially in Doriaani cities and the world of vert racing.
