Former King of Torness
K. Torness (649-698) Haemund Kraljarsson (a.k.a. The Gap-Toothed)
Human Warrior/18
Haemund, son of Kraljar, son of Siglaf was his father's eldest son and born Crown Prince of Torness. His early life was spent in idleness, hunting and wenching his way. His father did not approve of his ways, nor of the woman with whom he fell in love -- Fynnda, the daughter of a fisherman. Despite his misgivings, Haemund matured quickly thereafter, now seeing his responsibilities as being directly related to his new family.
With the death of King Kraljar in 649, Haemund assumed the throne. By this time, Fynnda had borne him two children (Storri and Aelfwyn), and she had herself died in childbirth with the second pregnancy. Despondent, yet urged to remarry to produce more heirs and provide stability, he took Thula of Veithir to wife shortly following the coronation.
Theirs was not a happy union. Haemund blamed Aelfwyn for Fynnda's death and resented Thula for attempting to replace his beloved first wife. She, in turn, despised him for his weakness; nevertheless, she did produce four children: Talkan, Gorm, Wylla, and Byrdda. Much to Aelfwyn's dismay, Haemund had much closer relationships with these children than her.
Thula passed away in 669 after a long battle with wasting sickness. Despite the unhappiness of their marriage, King Haemund once again found himself lonely and distracted. It was on a hunting trip when he met aharming young woman, decades younger than he, but whose wisdom and good cheer made him content. after a year of courtship, and to the dismay of the noblewomen, he married the commoner Myla in 671. Their relationship, while lacking the passion of his first marriage, was strong. Her level-headed pragmatism and inflagging optimism gave the old king solace and much-needed companionship.
In 697, the royal meadhall in Torheim was visted on several occasions by an unusually powerful troll who managed to kill Huscarles and damage the hall before disappearing. He summoned a band of heroes from the Citystate of the Invincible Overlord to rid his people of this menace. In the process of doing so, the hall was largely destroyed. King Haemund's body was discovered under the wreckage. His body now rests in the ancient Royal Barrows.
