Jalmarys

Every realm has a city whose inhabitants are mocked for their provincial unsophistication, and for the Empire that city is Jalmarys. One of the first imperial colonies established during the great crusades, it served the Empire as a base to subdue the Eastern tribes, and was a resupply place for armies moving East. The growing Empire was happy to accept the support and resources from the region's people, but have always snickered at them behind their backs. That changed when the Jalmaryan general Carsos staged a military coup against the empire in the late 2nd age. When a senator, stymied by his thick accent, nervously asked him to repeat a decree, he unsheathed his sword and said, "Do you understand this?"   The city itself was once known for it's ideal pastures for the raising of cattle, pigs, and sheep. This meant that the city was always lightly populated, as most of the population lived in the fields, and would eventually take their livestock for sale in either Amitatys or Nazzareth. The city was thus more of a central location for shephards to resupply and as administration, than a city of it's own. For this, it gained a reputation as an unsophisticated backwater, with those of it's local accent being immediately denigrated by most of upper society.    In recent years the population has increased. Not because anything of value has entered, but because it is on the frontline of the ongoing civil war. The city is in a strategic position to protect the heartland of The Eastern Calradian empire from invasion by The Western Calradian Empire  across the Nazarine River. Many of the villages around it have been burnt down and destroyed, but it is now flush with soldiers, and the economy that this brings. The city is also flush with refugees, peasants from the rural shephard class who have sought refuge and eventually settled within the city walls.    In Response to the war, high and modern walls have been constructed, and significant resources have been invested to build up the city, to better defend against attack from the west. Some city nobles and merchants hope that all this investment will breath a new life and future into the city, if it isn't eventually destroyed in the war.
