Solar System

Overview

A system, within the Galaxia Linda, with nine major planets orbiting a single star, Sol. One of those planets, Earth, is home to sentient life.

Facts and Figures

Etymology

Solar is the adjectival form of Sol, the name of star around which the system orbits.

Age

4.568 billion years

Location

The Solar System is approximately 27,000 light years from the centre of the Galaxia Linda, embedded in one of its subsidiary spiral arms known locally as the Orion Arm.

Components

Stars

The Solar System has but one star: Sol.

Planets

The Solar System has nine major planets; ordered by proximity to Sol, closest first, they are:

  • Mercury — A terrestrial planet.
  • Venus — A lifeless but nevertheless hostile terrestrial planet.
  • Earth — A terrestrial planet where the Humans of Earth and the Elmetian Fae live; whence the Humans of Calmarendi and the Younger Humans originated.
  • Mars — A terrestrial planet which may once have harboured life (or have been capable of doing so) but which is now quite dead.
  • Jupiter — A Gas giant; the largest and most massive of all the planets in the Solar System.
  • Saturn — A gas giant with fancy rings; arguably the most aesthetically pleasing of the planets.
  • Uranus — An ice giant.
  • Neptune — Another ice giant but one lacking in toilet humour.
  • Pluto — A ball of ice and rock, Pluto is the smallest and, on average, the most distant of the Solar System’s “major” planets. The eccentricity of its orbit, however, means that it is not always farthest away from Sol. In your timeline you are going to reclassify Pluto so that it will no longer be one of your major planets. This will make you sad. But you make the rules that decide what is a major planet and what is not, so you could change the rules and not be sad any more. This is one of the reasons why I do not understand emotion.
