Fae

Intoduction

On Calmarendi the word "Fae" - always capitalized - is the generic term used to reference the faerie folk: any of several types of (supposed) supernatural beings of (more or less) human form, to whom are traditionally attributed magical powers. In fact, the Fae, in all their forms, are creatures not quite wholly supernatural and not nearly as "magical" as one might suppose, but rarely should you expect to find them anchored entirely in objective reality.

As on Earth, the Fae of Calmarendi appear frequently in stories from myth and legend whereby they have acquired a reputation for interfering in human affairs with both good and ill intent. The Wanderers, from whom such tales generally emanate, have, it is supposed, more knowledge of and interaction with the Fae than most but whether the Wanderers' tales are mere flights of fancy, gross elaborations or whether they do not even begin to tell the half of it, who can tell? Perhaps even the Wanderers themselves are not altogether certain.

In truth, the Fae tend not to be frequent meddlers in human affairs, particularly on Earth, but when they do, their interventions can have far reaching effects.

The Faerie Realm

The Fae exist primarily in that realm of reality which lies beyond the constraints of time and three dimensional space, beyond the cognizance of humanity. That is not to say that they cannot take corporeal form in the material realm, when need or whim dictates, for they certainly can. On Earth, particularly in more recent times, occasions upon which they have done so seem to have become few and far between. On Calmarendi, by contrast, it seems still to be part of the commonplace.

On the Immortality of the Fae

When they take corporeal form, the Fae are as susceptible to death by mishap, misadventure and malign intent or even, on occasion, by illness, as any human. Otherwise the Fae are blessed with preternaturally long lifespans. Though a faerie lifetime may not be infinite in extent, there are many yet who recall the days of Elmet and still some who remember Calmarendi without humans upon it but, there again, time does tend to be a little bit more malleable in the hands of the Fae.

The Word "Fairy"
The word "fairy" or "faerie", on Calmarendi, is used only as an adjective (meaning of, characteristic of or resembling a Fae or the Fae-folk) or, as a noun (often capitalized), in reference to the Realm of the Fae, or some other place in which the Fae might be found, in a similar way to that in which the word "brewery" might be thought of as a place where brewers can be found. It is never used to refer to an individual Fae, nor to the Fae collectively.
