The Academy of Magic

A free school for people believed to be able to control magic.

Structure

The Republic of Ponhearia is the benefactor of the Academy, and are the official rulers of the school. The Withholder of Arcane Traditions oversees the curriculum as well as mandating the percentage of students allowed to further their studies, or be inlisted as war mages in The Weave Brigade. Those that are not picked for either of those are helped into apprenticeships as Arcane Masons, Cryomantic Preservers, etc.   Within the school the headmaster known as the Arch Mage oversees the daily activities, makes sure the curriculum is withheld and in collaboration with the High Magus' chooses who will be furthering their studies and who won't.   There are only one High Magus for each school of magic taught at the Academy (i.e. Divination, Transmutation, Evocation, Abjuration, Illusion, Conjuration, and Enchantment), each of which are assigned one of the 7 towers of The Carved Palace. The High Magus' choose their own students (typically the student would've shown excelency in one of the seven schools taught at the Academy), who will train and work with the High Magus' to further their potential in their selected school.

Education

The Basis of Education
The students enrolled to the Academy will all get 2 years of basic studies, where they have to prove their worth. After the after which they are either granted a spot with a High Magus, enlisted for the Brigade or sent into an apprenticeship. During these first 2 years, the students will be known as "Prospect" and will be addressed as such (e.g. Prospect Anderson) to further the point that they have not yet proven themselves.   Continueing the Studies
Those that are selected to further their studies at the academy are chosen by one of the High Magus' to attend their studies in their towers, and are then known as "Novice" and will be addressed as such (e.g. Novice Anderson). This sort of apprenticeship with a High Magus lasts for 5 years.   After the Studies
When the studies with a High Magus is done the Novice is granted the official title of "Magus". A Magus is free to do as they please, but during their studies the Novice and High Magus would've found a topic of research that the now Magus will most likely continue after leaving the Academy. The Academy will keep in contact with the Magus to see how their continued self-studies are going and how they prosper on their research.   All graduates of the Academy are encouraged to attend Annual Arcane Assembly in Mostall, where they are to share any new knowledge with other mages.

Culture

From the first day at the Academy the students are taught that the use of magic should be to the benefit of the people. Students are taught to respect those that are of higher rank than them, where rank is measured in how long a person has studied the Arcane arts. So, while 2 people might both call themselves Magus, the one with the most years of study will still outrank the other.   Everyone at the Academy are expected to use every waken hour to study and better themselves, for the benefit of others. This means that if one wishes to use or learn spells that are purely selfish in nature, such as glamours, one must have to argue why it would benefit others. This is believed to be a good way to teach students to think critically on why and how their magic is used.   As mages are like to be selfish in nature, the school encourages sharing of knowledge, which sets the Ponhearian mages appart from mages found in other parts of the world.
