Children of Gaea
Mythology & Lore
The world was cold and barren when a gift from the Goddess Gaea fell from the heavens. It was a small seed and where it was buried a tree sprung up bringing with it life. The Goddess sent fish to the rivers and the seas, and woodland creatures to the forests. Other Gods saw what she had created and send their own creations such as humans, elves and dwarfs to populate the world. Some of these creatures took to worshiping the Goddess Gaea near the Tree of Creation, while others travelled to the furthest parts of the world and made settlements where they worshipped their own Gods. This time was known as the Creation.
Divine Origins
Those that stayed to worship were rewarded with the blessings of Gaea in the form of better harvests, more sheep or the swelling of a woman believed to be barren. The worshipeprs gave the Goddess the title Goddess of Life though some of the more pious named her The Mother and named themselves the Children of Gaea. The Children, wanting to thank Gaea, started making offerings to her at the Tree of Creation (believing this to be where Gaea resided) and soon found that their offerings were more than double soon after the offering. Learning this Gaea was quickly dubbed the Giver of Gifts, making her full title Goddess of Life and Giver of Gifts.
The area directly under the Tree of Creation was named sacred land and The Children, wanting to be close to their place of worship, started to clear the forest surrounding the tree and made permanent houses surrounding the tree for the permanent residents, as well as a large shelter for pilgrims (which later became the inn Oakenheart).
Tenets of Faith
- Nature is the most sacred gift from Gaea.
- Nature should be in balance, therefore no tree should ever be destroyed without the creation of a new tree.
- Life is a gift by The Mother and should be treated as such.
Priesthood
As the followers known as The Children grew in numbers it was decided that the one closest to The Mother, and therefore could talk on her behalf, should be the leader of the followers as well as the settlement (that had been given the name Heart of Gaea) that had grown beneath the Tree of Creation. It was decided that a High Priest(ess) should be named, and only at his/her death, would a new Priest(ess) be chosen.
In 3142 AC the High Priestess of Gaea is Tara Nóstal'dir.
