Farlander
The Northamosi, also known as snow elves or Farlanders, are an elven ethnic group from the subcontinent of Northamos. They are known for the thick hairs which cover significant portions of their bodies in both men and women.
Culture
Culture and cultural heritage
Like other elven races, Farlanders inherit the magic from their fey ancestry. Those capable of harnessing magic will usually become healers and builders, allowing for tribes to quickly build new villages during their migratory paths. However, it is forbidden for a magic user to participate in hunting, as the Farlanders believe it brings bad fortune.
Shared customary codes and values
In Farlander culture, the family unit does not exist. Instead, every member of a tribe is considered part of the same "family". As such, any sexual relationships between members of the same tribe are considered incestuous, and young members of a tribe are encouraged to only seek partners during Wintering, from members of other tribes.
Common Customs, traditions and rituals
Wintering
Northamos can become a very dangerous place during the long, dark winters. Because of this, the Farlanders developed the custom called Wintering, wherein all the migratory tribes gather together at the settlement of Warmhall until the end of winter. At this gathering, tribes will share their food and gather around the fire for warmth. Elders will discuss matters of lineage and migratory paths, and the youth will court members of other tribes.
Trial of Worth
During Wintering, a Farlander who desires to become a chieftain of his own tribe can invoke his right of Trial before a council of Elders . if the person in question has acquired enough renown through heroic deeds, the elders will send them on a dangerous quest, which will generally involve journeying far north in the dead of winter and returning with a rare herb or pelt. If the person is successful, they are allowed to invite others into their new tribe.
Ideals
Beauty Ideals
In Farlander culture, body hair is a sign of strength and adaptability. Both men and women are encouraged to grow out their beards.
Gender Ideals
Though all elven races are androgynous, Farlander culture does recognize gender as a concept. All farlanders are designated male at birth, and are taught to fill the roles of both men and women. Upon puberty, farlanders who develop broader shoulders and thicker beards remain male, while those who develop less hair are designated as women.
Courtship Ideals
During the Wintering, there are many opportunities for bachelors to find a match, such as dances, parties and games. When spring comes, women who have become pregnant during the festivities join their mate's tribe after a short ceremony. These wives are referred to as "newkin". If the woman in question is a chieftain, her husband is the one to join her as newkin.
