Historical Details

Background

The Oath of Grace originates from the prophetic visions of a Benedictine Monk in 500 Ancient Era. Tasked by Infinite Grace, this monk meticulously recorded the visions that foretold the coming apocalypse and the need for a human protector. Recognizing the sacred importance of the role, he inscribed the Oath of Grace on vellum at the very beginning of the manuscript.

The Monk, guided by his visions, also wove divine energy into the manuscript's silk bookmark. This artifact serves both as a guardian and a test. Those unworthy to take the oath or who attempt to misuse the text are struck dead by a poison on the bookmark. Only the prophesied individual, validated by the visions, may approach, read and recite the Oath of Grace without peril.

Once the oath is taken, Infinite Grace bestows its chosen Guardian with strength, speed, immunity to disease, among other benefits.

History

The Oath of Grace has remained untouched for centuries, protected within the sturdy walls of Guardian Solace. The combined efforts of the Vatican, the Benedictine Monks and the Frontier Pathfinders, along with the stewardship of the butlers in later years, the Oath and The Doomsday Codex have remained safe. It has also helped that most doubt the existence of the Oath of Grace.

As the apocalypse began to stir, The Doomsday Codex's prophecies came to pass, drawing humanity closer to the time when the Guardian would be called upon.

Legacy

Taking the Oath of Grace is both a blessing and a burden. The individual becomes the Guardian of Caelum Prime, charged with the survival of humanity and defense against the Gloombringers and their allies. The Oath imbues the Guardian with divine power, but it also binds them to a life of sacrifice. They are set apart, no longer truly human, yet not wholly divine.

Through the Guardian's deeds, the legacy of the Oath of Grace serves as a beacon of hope, a reminder of humanity's resilience, and a symbol of Infinite Grace's light.

Term

The Oath of Grace is eternal, embedded in the sacred manuscript and preserved across the millennia. It remained a part of the The Doomsday Codex. Unfortunately, the Oath of Grace burned when Guardian Solace fell to the Gloombringers, leaving Josiah the first and only Guardian of Caelum Prime. Only time witll tell what his term as Guardian will bring.

Why did it take 500 years after the last story for the apocalypse to start? Why was I chosen to be Guardian, be the one to take the Oath? *Deep Breath* I'm not going to start whining again. I'm still curious about the years between the last story in The Doomsday Codex and when I took the Oath. What else had to happen for events to play out as they are? Or was everything just waiting for me? If it's the last then why wait to have me born when I was?
