Personal history
She was a naive, sheltered, and wealthy heiress. After meeting Sampson Bane, she knew he was the man for her, even though her parents disapproved. Nothing they said could dissuade her (though, they really had nothing but their instincts telling them something was wrong.)
They were married 3 months after they met. While her parents didn't complete cut her off, she and Sampson didn't live in the same wealth that she had grown up in. Still, Nicola was happy to be married and happy to have a house of her own. She didn't like how often Sampson was gone because it reminded her of her parents' marriage and she'd wanted hers to be different.
But he'd never talked to her about what he did, just said that he was increasing their wealth so that he could keep her in the style she was used to. Almost a year into their marriage, she was devastated to find out that Sampson was dead. With his death ruled an accident, Nicola did her best to move on, but once a year, on the anniversary of his death, she visits him on the Hollow Coast Bridge over the Jindi River.
For the last five years, she wondered what had taken him over the bridge but it wasn't until a couple months before the 5th anniversary of his death that she recieved a manilla envelope (anoyomously) which a ripped paper reading "He cheated" and a stack of photos of Sampson with other women.
On the anniversary of his death, she confronted him about it.
