Valak and the Trapped Smiths

Dæleon, the world renowned smith, creator of two champion's swords, Malevolence and Oath Keeper, and the Living Sword Guide of the Way, worked in the heat of one of the volcanic forges of Bolo, crafting his next masterpiece.   Not far away, in a second cave-forge, was Gwenneth Deepforge, a completely unheard of dwarfish smith, who had just recently completed her apprenticeship to another medicore, unknown dwarfish smith. Gwenneth was also hard at work, making a weapon she barely had the words to describe, but which had come to her days before in a dream.   Both smiths hammered steel and Fonujajo, crafting magical blades in the unique atmospheres of Manebolo. Both were nearing completion of their work, only days or even hours from completion. Both heard the rumblings of the mountain. Both ignored them. Both were still working as lava streamed down the outside of their respective caves, trapping them.   As Dæleon felt the heat suddenly at his back, he turned to see the lava seeping into his cave, its surface already beginning to cool. He shouted impotently at the quickly hardening rock. He took some of his stock material and shoved it into the material, hoping to be able to pry it open once it had cooled. When it did he kept trying to manage his escape.   Gwenneth Deepforge, however, felt the heat, and sought to use it as a tool. She took her nearly completed blade, and plunged it into the still molten lava as a form of quenching. She pulled the blade out in plunged it again into the cooling lava, and a third time. She returned to her forge and anvil, working on the final details of the blade, now hardened in lava.   On this day, only Dæleon and Gwenneth Deepforge were trapped by the eruption. And on this day, Valak himself appeared while the lava was still pouring into the ocean. He waited, observing the actions of the two smiths. As Dæleon hammered fruitlessly at the rock that now encased him, Valak reached a hand through the still-hot stone and pulled the wayward smith from his prision and placed him in a forest, a day's walk away.   Gwenneth, however, continued working on her blade, completing one of the finest blades ever seen as Valak watched. As she molded the final piece of metal into place on the handle, Valak stepped through the heat of the forge into the cave. He greeted her and blessed her blade, imbuing it with a tiny spark of his soul, christening the newly born sword Nuveitgea, The Living. He escorted her out of the cave to the base of the island, where he had summoned his Scion Jindack, the Flame, to further escort Gwenneth Deepforge and Nuveitgea back to their king, so that he might know the greatest smith living and the greatest sword yet made by dwarfish hands, the living sword Nuveitgea.
