Derogus Character in Binaka | World Anvil

Derogus (/dɛˈɹagʌs/)

(a.k.a. The Designer)

A mad genius with mechanical and minor magical machinery. She designed and continues to operate the Doomuez of Nezhgub .   Derogus is a diminutive woman, now very old. She was presumed dead soon after the completion of the city of Nezhgub, which she helped design, as no one had seen her. However, she is alive and well, and still operating the undercity. She continues to build and expand the city beneath the city, despite the fact that it is now far larger than the city proper.

Personal history

Very little is known of Derogus. In fact, she knows next to nothing of who she is.   She awoke in a cave located just south of where Nezhgub was destined to be constructed. She was found the next day, trudging north through the desert, by one of Meuzhzel's patrols. She didn't know her name, her age, or even where she came from.   The soldiers took her to the temporary tent city Meuhzel had built as a home base for scouting, surveying, and constructing the proposed city. The soldiers took her to the infirmary, where she was checked out and declared healthy, especially for her apparent age. The exceptions were her unexplained amnesia and a strong emanation of residual magical energy. The latter is not uncommon (any number of things can cause this) and it was decided that what ever had caused it was probably also the cause of the amnesia.   Derogus was then taken to the camp leader, General Gurcheug. As it happened, Meuzhzel had decided to visit the camp to discuss plans with the General, as well as the architect, Zhequoo Ebdug. After brief introductions, Meuzhzel decided he liked this stranger, who seemed intelligent and well spoken and had brilliant ideas on how to operate the centerpiece of the future city, the combat arena. The woman's escorts were dismissed and the quartet discussed the new city well into the night.   From that point on the woman, newly named Derogus, or the Designer, would be one of the forces behind the construction of the new city of Nezhgub.

Hidden Past

What follows is Derogus' true history, before the cave. No one, not even her, knows this story of how she came to be in the cave near the future city of Nezhgub.

Alvax was now trapped. Her stronghold was breached, her army had abandoned her. She had her lieutenant, herself, and the few remaining tricks of her inner sanctum to protect herself. But it was too late. She was weakened more than she ever had been before and she could hear the opposing forces breaching the outer door.   "Mistress, seal your self in the Chamber. I can hold them off long enough for you to activate it." Her long-time lieutenant, Pāvadöx, was loyal to the end.   As Alvax sealed the Chamber, she saw the face of the traitor, Žan Éxurpé. She activated the suspension mechanism and steeled herself as the world faded to black.
When she awoke, she knew not who she was, or how she got here, in a cool, dark cave. Perhaps she'd never know.
During the God War at the end of the First Age, Alvax án Déŗablo and her army succumbed to the combined forces of Žan Éxurpé and ... two gods ... She activated a failsafe mechanism she had constructed. But it malfunctioned, either by construction or design. While she survived, she was placed in a form of suspended animation and held in a pocket realm until some time in the Fourth Age, when she was expelled into the nearest, safe location to where she had entered the realm.   But her time in suspended animation did not treat her well. She lost all of her memories, and a large portion of her powers. And she had aged an indeterminable amount. A positive side effect is that now she is outside the pocket realm she no longer ages.
