Varalys
Varalys can refer to the original chemical varalium, found in several bodies of freshwater or soils across the globe, but it's commonly used and referred to as the medical drug varalys, used to subdue arcanic effects, as well as a physical and psychological depressant. It's also the most widely used drug on the Globe, and many arcanists use it to combat the effects of arcana poisoning.
Alternatively, it can be used to inhibit the arcanic receptors in slighen to prevent them from detecting the presence of arcana. By Protectorate law, it is highly illegal anywhere in the Aveaan Empire to give a working slighen varalys.

As an Arcanic Inhibitor
Arcanic receptors, which are used to channel the body's natural arcana reserve as well as detect it in the environment, can be inhibited by the ingestion of the chemical varalis. This usually doesn't affect an arcanist's ability to use arcana, or the overall power and effect of their usage, but rather it works after an individual performs their talent to prevent the arcana from continuing to activate within the bloodstream. This in turn slows down the process of arcanic poisoning. As a Depressant
Varalys also acts as an inhibitor for various chemicals associated with psychological energy and mania, which is a common symptom of certain arcanic poisonings. Thus, varalys is often used on arcanists in this regard, making it an effective and appealing drug in many instances and a viable alternative to many of the less humane practices historically used to secure and control arcanists.

Inigo Alaniss
Inigo has been taking varalys regularly since her early childhood as a method of combating her hallucinations and delusions, both symptoms of moderate arcanic poisoning. However, she also exemplifies the major downsides to long-term varalys usage—she has a constantly depressed demeanor while on the drug and has built up a steadily increasing tolerance to it as well.
I think the only thing I would like more of is information on arcane poisoning. It is mentioned several times, but there is no article link. Even a little sidebar on it would go a long way in fleshing out the article.
