Grund Settlement in Belthuran | World Anvil

Grund

Demographics

Mostly human (79%) and dwarves (9%) with smaller numbers of other races.

Government

A Jarl rules over the Sunderer's Steppe, which largely comes down to ruling over Grund and the Blazebasin Lake.

Defences

A stone wall and a large presence of guards and mercanaries on hire from local companies mostly to aid in defending Blazestone quarries.

Industry & Trade

Aside from a thriving fishing community the true industry and trade of Grund is the production of a unique type of stone known as Blazestone. This orange granite-like stone forms only in the Sunderer's Steppe and is thought to be a by-product of the Sunderer scorching the land east of Grund in the war between the gods at the end of the first era. However, the stone came to be it is capable of producing its own heat seemingly in direct proportion to how cold it is around the stone, which makes it extremely valuable in Ursand. The stone is refined into blocks and bricks which over time has gone into the many roads of Ursand and just as importantly the many houses of the people who live there. A pathway of Blazestone will melt snowfall and never freeze over, while it isn't hot enough to prevent the Gravefog from rolling in over it, it does serve as a useful material for a house by being both strong, plentiful, and warming. In recent years farming has taken to tilling a field and planting their seeds and laying Blazestone blocks beside the plants to produce heat throughout the cold days and colder nights of Ursand, which has met with limited success but enough to cause people to look into the idea more.

Infrastructure

Canals built out of Blazestone blocks let water move through the city to power watermills that help the process of refining Blazestone as well as other blacksmiths and anyone who can benefit from some level of automation.

Assets

Large fishing community, and a large portion of stonemasons as well as access to Blazestone from the Sunderer's Steppe. Blazestone brick walkways prevent ice and snow from forming on walkways and roads.

Guilds and Factions

The Crafter's Guild has a large presence in the city seeking to make sure the stone masons there produce quality work, especially given how important their work is to the Ursandian people.

Architecture

Most of Grund's building are nordic in style, longhouses of Ursandian Lumber with Blazestone basements, foundations, doorways, and window frames. Some buildings are built entirely of Blazestone but they are often small and used as sheds to smoke fish or meat to help preserve them.

Natural Resources

Ursandian Lumber, Blazestone, and Fish.
