The Hinterlands

The Hinterlands are a fair-sized continent on Basiliath, spanning from the Northern Hinterlands in the north to the Bay of Marcana in the south. While smaller than the neighboring continent of Northwind, it has a far greater population due to its gentler climate. The continent's name is a translation of the Elvish word Moreliath, which means "Unknown Land," into the Common Language of the Aşcalites. It is not to be confused with the Elvish Empire of Moreliath, which took its name from the landmass.
Following the fall of Old Armoriel and the conquests of Hostilius the Great, the Republic of Perellia is the ascendant power in the region, controlling the lion's share of the continent. Other notable political entities on the continent include the Domain of Wispenroot, a rump state left following the Empire of Moreliath's fall; the Duchy of Charl; and the Archcounty of Heotha, both home to the Charlishmen.
