Escher was a member of an adventuring band, led by the Firebrand who he knows as Ezmerelda d'Avenir, who attempted to destroy Strahd von Zarovich. Though they were successful in "slaying" the Count, STrahd had first become fascinated with Echer's battle music and turned him into a Vampire. Since coming back from the dead, Escher has been under Strahd's control.
