The Spicers

The Physicians and Chemists guild. Until the autumn of 554, it was considered a middling guild of Renelestre. At that point in time, following the deposition of House Valvetti, the need to assign some form of administration to that house's former territory led the Prince's Privy Council to add two seats to the council, gift those seats to one guild and one Lord's house, and to divide up the territories in question between them. After a series of interviews with an assortment of Guildmasters, it was decided that The Spicers should be assigned the guild designated seat, making the organization in affect a new Major Guild in the city. Before their upraising, they had been represented on the Privy Council by The Spool.   The Spicers encompass the work of doctors, surgeons, and chemists (something akin to a pharmacist who also designs and makes various potions and medicines). They have been an standing guild since the mid 5th century, and are seen by many to run in some level of competition to the Church as a primary source of healing and general healthcare. They do, however, tend to have a much more common daily function in citizens' lives providing various remedies which would be either beneath the level of care the church would provide (cures to things such as stomach ailments, etc.) or which the church would feel unnecessary or even morally against their oaths to provide (this would include anything from chemical/magical fertility and anti-fertility potions to aphrodesiacs, to even such things as elective cosmetic surgeries and alter-self/disguise potions. To be a licensed guild member of the Spicers, one must hold a certification from one of the accreditied universities in the fields of biology, chemicology and transmutation, though some members also hold levels of certification in necromancy as well (dealing with dead tissue, etc.), and though they do not have the power to raise dead as members of the church have through divine magic, they are otherwise able to, through the modern approaches of "scientific and practical magicks" replicate a fairly overlapping (though expanding into unique) skillsets. In order to secure a number of the more unconventional services they provide, a prospective customer must often have a certification of procurement or license from the University, though there are circumstances where the guild itself has the right to sidestep this and grant a temporary license themselves. These protections to not apply to the more mundane and everyday services the guild provides, however, and most daily health needs are available to customers of any sort.
