The Ears

"If there is something that needs doing, then there's something that needs knowing before the doing gets done. We'll get to knowing, so that you all can get to doing." -Chance, Junior Officer of the Free Jackals
The "Ears" are the intelligence and spy wing of The Free Jackals. Originally started by Senior Officer Crow when it became clear that the Jackals were walking into too many situations without necessary intel, they have become one of the strongest intelligence gathering and infiltration groups in the Mundane World. Often used as a way to infiltrate other organizations and to gain access to secrets and plans of both allies and enemies before they can bring harm to the Jackals, they also often function as initial intermediaries and potential contract negotiators for the mercenary company. Currently headed by Junior Officer Chance, the Ears have had a lot of work to do in the current formation of the Jackals as a pseudo-faction within Renelestre. Chance has demonstrated the usefulness of the Ears in this regard and has brought the wing back into a decent state from its greatest failure in the history of the Jackals: The lack of intel on the plans by Telemon to lay a trap for the company at the fall of Bradford. During that time, Chance had been a senior member of the Ears under the leadership of Sly, but when most of the Jackals were slain in the massacre, he became the highest default leader of the Ears as its lone surviving senior member.

Structure

The organizational structure is intertwined with that of the The Free Jackals. It is headed by a specific Junior Officer, under whom are gathered a number of other members with varying degrees of leadership in the Ears which corresponds to their position within the Jackals as a whole. For instance, someone may be promoted to the equivalent of Corporal because of their work within the Ears, which still gives them authority in pitched battle that belies their rank, even though their direct subordinates may not be present. That being said, outside of active battle, they exist within their command structure and follow those rules. Members may be also be transferred in and out of units and even back to the greater Jackals as a whole. Membership in the Ears is both a job and a specialization: Members are expected to still perform and practice all regular duties of a Jackal in their day-to-day life (there are no pure paper-pushers, for instance).
