The Torches
The Torches are the "Medical" and field surgical unit within the The Free Jackals. They are named, rather cheekily, after the practice of the Jackals to burn their dead, the rites and fires being overseen by the clerics and paladins of the Jackals. Having no official religious affiliation (and in fact, having worked directly for some rather unsavory characters themselves in the past), the Torches have developed some rather bizarre cultic practices which verge upon their own religious customs (indeed, a couple of paladins within the jackals serve oaths of devotion to the organization itself).
In name, the Torches are managed by the senior or junior officer who is known as the Chief Medic Officer (in practice this means the member who wields the medic role-card), though oftentimes the individuals contained within the Torches are also members of various different squadrons.
Structure
A Subgroup of the The Free Jackals, as a way to organize command structure within larger scale operations. It had much more purpose to its "separation" and designation during times in which the Jackals were a larger organization, but still finds its use in training and perfecting their skill-set.
It is headed by a specific Junior Officer, under whom are gathered a number of other members with varying degrees of leadership in the Torches which corresponds to their position within the Jackals as a whole. For instance, someone may be promoted to the equivalent of Corporal because of their work within the Torches, which still gives them authority in pitched battle that belies their rank, even though their direct subordinates may not be present. That being said, outside of active battle, they exist within their command structure and follow those rules. Members may be also be transferred in and out of units and even back to the greater Jackals as a whole. Membership in the Torches is both a job and a specialization: Members are expected to still perform and practice all regular duties of a Jackal in their day-to-day life (there are no pure paper-pushers, for instance).
