Dalkaria (dahl-kahr-ee-uh)
Situated to the northeast of mainland Ayndrinor, the island of Dalkaria is a frigid place of danger and perseverance. The humans who live in the various towns here are hearty, able to withstand the biting cold of the half-year winters. Their ancestors have lived here for millennia, and they are not about to give up on that legacy of toughness and gritty determination.
The island itself is divided into two distinct halves, separated by mountains and forests. The southern plains are somewhat fruitful and prosperous, though only a few crops can grow in this climate. The northern half of the island is a cold tundra where growing traditional crops is impossible, but lichen and certain tubers and root vegetables can be cultivated carefully. In the direct center of the island is a massive lake ringed almost entirely by tall mountains. The snow from these mountains melts in the spring-summer season and flows down into the lake, which teems with all manner of fish and crustaceans.
The two forests on either side of the island are vastly different from one another but divide the continent the same. The eastern forest is known as the Abundant Forest and features many different types of berries, fungi, and other edible plants, not to mention the game animals that call the forest home. The towns that are situated on the edge of this forest are able to survive relatively easily, living off what the forest provides. The western forest, on the other hand, is known as the Forbidden Forest, and it is a land where people dare not tread. Portals to both the Feywild and the Shadowfell appear at random all throughout the forest, with denizens of those realms passing back and forth to the Material Plane. Besides those creatures, other hungry beasts fight for dominance and supremacy, and rumors of giants and dragons are enough to keep all but the most adventurous folk away.
The waters that surround the island of Dalkaria are typically frigid, though only the northern Icehome Ocean fills with enough ice to prevent ship travel for several months out of the year. The western Strait is frigid but navigable and prosperous for the fishermen and crabbers who work there. The southern and eastern seas are relatively warm and allow travel and trade with the rest of the world.
