Lawkeepers

History

For as long as there has been a human civilisation, there has also been the Lawkeepers. Holdan Lancius, First King of the Humans, set up the Lawkeepers upon the official founding of Dawnstone. From there, the Lawkeepers went with each new settlement built as the Age of Discovery progressed.   For the 3,000 years between the founding of Dawnstone and end of The Ten Year Winter, only humans operated with the Lawkeeper title. The other species had their own facsimile of law enforcement but after the devastation caused by the extended winter, the Dwarves and Gnomes adopted the titles as part of the unification effort between the nations of Aldenia. The Elves, whilst part of the unification, did not follow suit in that regard.

Ranks

Lawkeeper General

In Dawnstone, the Lawkeeper General is also the Minister of Order in the Dawnstone government. The Lawkeeper General in the Dwarven and Gnomish societies hold the equivalent posts there. They are not typically involved in the day-to-day law enforcement of the city but are in charge of larger initiatives and coordinated efforts with the other Ministers, though most of the administrative duties fall to the Deputy General. The Lawkeeper General is chosen by their respective monarch/ruler.

Deputy Lawkeeper General

The Deputy spends most of their time interfacing between the Chief Lawkeepers and the Lawkeeper General. Often, the Lawkeeper General gives the authority to answer most queries the Chief Lawkeepers have to the Deputy so that they can focus on their own duties. The Deputy is chosen by the Lawkeeper General for that region.

Chief Lawkeeper

Chief Lawkeepers are in charge of the law enforcement in a particular town or city or area. For instance, there is one Chief Lawkeeper in the town of Ullford, but the capital Dawnstone has several, one for each district. They deal with organising the street level crime fighting and distribution of their Lawkeepers. They will not typically join the efforts unless absolutely necessary. The Chief will also spend some of their time passing reports to the Deputy and often are part of town councils, so have those duties thrust upon as well.

Deputy Lawkeeper

Similarly to the Deputy Lawkeeper General, the Deputy Chief Lawkeeper will often end up being the messenger between Lawkeepers and their Chief. They are the ones who usually get called out if a high authority than just Lawkeeper is needed to settle a dispute.
