Soren Pashad

Second Lieutenant Soren Kivas Pashad

I know that the world is a dangerous place and that evil is unstoppable, but a lot of Avani are hurting and scared and they'll stay that way if somebody doesn't do something. If we can make things just a little less dangerous, that would make all the difference in the world.
— Soren Pashad
Soren Pashad is a Jasani soldier training for the special forces, as well as being the son of Pentarchs Isami Pashad and Tanner Pashad. He is an idealistic teen who is optimistic and trusting though, if things get dangerous, he is a good fighter to have around.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Though Soren is an accomplished soldier and okay athlete, he can't overcome the traits of his race and age. His strength is strictly average for an Avani (though above average for a Sparalus), and his body is abnormally frail. Luckily, though, his expert agility and reflexes make up for it. He is useful to give an Arbalest or Firebolts.

Body Features

Soren is covered in light brown feathers, with darker brown specks covering his back, wings, and face. On his arm-wings there are patterns of light brown lines and a few black feathers randomly placed among his ordinary brown feathers. His arms and legs are an almost black brown, which is abnormal for his race and more common among groups like the Cyanni or Hirundine. His belly is a lighter shade of brown than the rest of his body, and his tail feathers have a few horizontal black stripes on them.

Facial Features

Black feathers surround his beak and eyes (giving him a Cyanni like face)

Identifying Characteristics

One of the most curious parts about his appearance is a couple of symmetrical bright blue feathers in his tail. It is unclear what these come from, but it makes him easily identified from behind.

Physical quirks

Soren is right-handed and right-eye dominant.

Apparel & Accessories

Soren has been raised as a soldier for most of his life, meaning that he has grown accustomed to wearing the various combat and dress uniforms that come with that. He will often be found wearing steel armor with gambeson padding even when an event calls for less militaristic attire. When forcibly separated from his uniform, which is guaranteed to put him in a bit of a foul mood (until something pretty distracts him), he'll usually turn to finer silk or Galembas clothes more befitting of an aristocrat. He dislikes civilian clothes in general. On top of the lack of protection, Avani clothing tends to be skimpy. It makes him feel exposed in areas that by human standards shouldn't be exposed.

Specialized Equipment

Soren is trained in a wide variety of weapon techniques and skills, even though he often lacks the raw strength to use them effectively in combat. Often he will default to various forms of single-handed sabres, rapiers, and short swords in combat, which maximize the effective use of his agility without requiring as much physical prowess. However, he shines the most with ranged weapons (excluding the bow). Jassar training particularly focuses on the use of Firebolts fixed with bayonets for close quarters. He is also able to use Bowtractors and arbalests with some success, though some of the quirks of using a crossbow make it hard for him to learn.   In terms of armor, Soren prefers using a steel chestplate over gambeson padding, with hardened leather protecting his arms and legs. However, this defeats all possibility of flying during battle and certainly doesn't complement his agility-focused fighting style. Others have pointed this out to him, but he's kind of stubborn.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Soren was hatched during the night on 2nd of 11th Lunas, 446, in the Pashad family nursery in Constolba. This was only a few years before his mother, Isami Pashad, became a pentarch, and a short time after his father did. He had two siblings who hatched around the same time. However, both of them contracted Soul Sickness shortly after hatching. Soren also has a younger sister named Katie Pashad. They became very close, but after deciding that a military future was not something she looked forward to Katie moved to Hindaros to pursue entering the Stardust College of Fine Arts. Their parents weren't thrilled, but they funded it in full. Though Soren has remained in his military training, this event caused him to inherit some of his sister's rebelliousness.

Education

From a young age Soren was expected to follow in his family's talons and become a military officer. In pursuit of this goal he enrolled as one of the youngest students trained at the Lakati Military Academy. There he recieved half a cycle of training for front line combat positions and asymmetric warfare. He is currently still in the phase of apprenticeship, which is considered on the job training for becoming a true Jassar.

Employment

Though Soren is technically royalty, after graduating the academy he served a 40-day tour of duty in southern Jasani to put down a terrorist organization. This included frontline combat during the 3-day OPERATION: Telavok, for which Soren received the bronze arrow for bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. After the uprising was suppressed, Soren's combat flight was moved north to engage in defensive operations around the city of Fortorvi. These operations were generally successful in establishing a larger safe perimeter around the town, though criticized for the poor leadership involved.   After this decently prestigious combat record for an apprentice, it became readily apparent that within about six cycles Soren would soon reach a rank that he'd eventually replace one of his parents as pentarch. To compensate he was transferred to the Jassar 1st home guard, both to keep him out of danger and recieve more in-depth teaching in related subjects. Since then he has been learning more about government duties and royalty with less time spent on military training, though he is often involved in formal ceremonies and defensive operations.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Among Soren's greatest achievements is his role in the aforementioned Operation Telavok, an assault to retake a town that had been completely taken over by a terrorist organization. It is notable for the decisive deployment of Jassar shock troopers to quickly end what could've turned into a multi-week siege. The operation also had the complication that a number of Apogees descended on the village. Soren's flight managed to seize control of a heavily fortified building during the brutal street-to-street fighting and, with less the 20 troops, defended the force's flank against assault from Avani and Fallen for three days. Soren, notably, proved to be a skilled marksman with Firebolts in the line of duty. It earned him a promotion and a bronze arrow.   Though it is nearly irrelevant to combat, Soren enjoys noting that he has also won awards in a few art contests (mostly participation trophies) and insists that he is a great singer.

Failures & Embarrassments

Soren hasn't been in the public eye long enough to accumulate many major embarrassments, but close neighbors suggest that he is overly idealistic and trusting. This has gotten him sucked into a few frauds and scams. It causes a great deal of tension with his superiors, though they also use him as an easy way to uncover illegal schemes. Also, he is not a good singer no matter what he tells people.

Mental Trauma

Soren isn't known to have any serious mental trauma or fears, which is honestly a bad thing. It can make him reckless and headstrong at inopportune times. After his extended period of fighting fallen, made more likely by how his birth-siblings both became infected, it is possible that he may have early stages of Soul Sickness. No testing has been done on the matter. This may be made manifest in his constant absentmindedness.

Intellectual Characteristics

Soren has an above average intelligence and can quickly pick up new information. From his studies he has learned a great deal about history and is very perceptive of things (which is an important trait for a marksman to have). However, all of his booksmarts and intelligence doesn't stop him from being an inexperienced ditz at times when he needs a more innate knowledge of something that isn't necessarily factual. Situations about things he hasn't learned about can easily overwhelm him.

Morality & Philosophy

Soren is a strong believer in following one's heart and doing the right thing, no matter the circumstances. If an officer gave him an order to do something that he believes is wrong, he would refuse. He is also very open about his beliefs regardless of if they could get him in trouble. He strongly supports the pursuit of knowledge and a just world, though he believes that there are very few things that aren't forgivable. Optimism colors his stance on the world, and Soren is an advocate of the idea that no Avani is truly evil, even when lots of evidence points to the contrary.

Personality Characteristics

Personality Quirks

Soren's nose is often running (possibly a symptom of early-stage soul-sickness), and his tail-feathers will often expand and contract rapidly while he is talking

Social

Family Ties

Soren's mother is Isami Pashad, the Jasani Chief of Naval Forces, and Tanner Pashad, the Chief of Special Operations. This connects him to the powerful Rose and Pashad families respectively. The Rose family in particular has held aristocratic-military power for well over a hundred years. Soren's grandfather, Stark Rose, for instance was one of the Constol royal family's top advisors until he led the military coup that created the new country. Meanwhile, the Pashads had a history of taking part in the various attempted revolutions and played a significant role in financing the revolt.

Social Aptitude

Soren, from his experience living in the prestigious levels of society, has a very charismatic personality. He can easily persuade or lie (which he never does, of course) to people to get what he wants.
