Sugikawa Clan

The Sugikawa clan is by far the youngest of the leading clans of Rokugan. Coming into power only a couple hundred years ago during the last Oni war with Yusho who was but a simple peasant recruited to aid in the war. Showing his unnatural strength and unwavering perseverance in battle, Yusho had impressed the Tosakaga Shogun and thus was rewarded for his efforts during the battle of Yamato bridge. After the battle, Yusho was given the Samurai name of Yoshi, and a new family name, Sugikawa. This would only be the beginning of the stories of the man who came to be known as Yoshi the Indomitable. No matter how brutal and bloody the battle, Yoshi would hold the line against the advancing Oni, so it was no surprise that when the war was over he was gifted with the greatest honor the shogun could give a single man. Debates had been raging on for decades about what clan would be in control of Yushu island, but the Shogun had finally decided. A new great clan would be made of the Sugikawa, and Yushu would be the province in which it would govern. Yoshi was given the option to choose where he would centralize his rule, to which he responded famously with " I would ask of no gift greater than to have my family aid in watching over the town that made us who we are today. " Yoshi would later be recognized as the man who guided Kogane into becoming the sprawling city it is today. For nearly two centuries the Sugikawa clan would govern Yushu, embracing their roots and making the city into a place of harmony between peoples. The other mighty clans of Rokugan may still not recognize the Sugikawa as true samurai, but the people of Yushu see them as the prime example of what Samurai should strive to be. But all things must end, and recently the capital would be wrestled from their grasp and Yushu would fall into the hands of another up and coming clan, the mysterious Akuma who's home is yet unknown. While the Sugikawa clan still has one remaining heir and hope, many are worried that this mighty clan may cease to exist before it's heir, Yoshihiro, is able to retaliate. Thanks in no small part to the efforts of the Gold Lotus along with reinforcements from the Kasai clan, Yoshihiro Sugikawa would successfully retake Kogane and liberate Yushu from Akuma control.
