Nobunaga Kasai

After the death of his father following shortly after the death of the late heirless Shogun, Nobunaga found himself in the midst of a power struggle between himself and his two younger brothers. Egged on by their mother, Nobuhide and Nobuyoshi rebelled against Nobunaga in an attempt to seize power of the Kasai clan and Odawari. This is what many now refer to as the beginning of the Rokugaan civil war. After 5 long years of warring with his brothers, Nobunaga had come out on top. He knew, however, that allowing his brothers to live would only result in the weakening of his own power and would enable them to rise up to challenge his rule again. To avoid this, Nobunaga sentenced them both to seppuku, to which the two brothers followed with pride. After their parting, Nobunaga turned to the woman responsible, his mother, and had her executed as well. Taking the first step in reunifying Odawari, Nobunaga was now threatened by a power far greater than himself. A rival clan, relatives to the late Shogun had risen to great power, and during the five years taken much land from his family. To reaffirm the Kasai clan's position as Daimyo of Odawari, he would now have to protect the puppet Tosakani Shogunate from the thriving Torakaga clan.   The war was nearly over as soon as it had begun. The Torakaga clan had cut swathes through Odawari, from Kabedomo to Janata, taking with them all the land Nobunaga had regained in the war with his brothers. The Torakaga clan made camp in the mountains north of Gifu, and begun celebrating their soon to be victory over the Kasai clan early. With their army of 20,000 men, Torakaga had naught to fear from the Kasai army. Numbering a measly 5,000, the Torakaga Daimyo knew the final siege would be an easy one. But Nobunaga had a plan, he always had a plan. Late into the evening, a storm rolled over the Torakaga camp. Their men, fattened and drunk from the day of celebration were not prepared for what was to come.   Nobunaga had set out from his home in Gifu early that morning, bringing mostly volunteers who vowed to defend their land from the invaders. They were outnumbered four to one in favor of the Torakaga. This would not stop Nobunaga, for they had made one deathly mistake. As a boy, Nobunaga would often visit these mountains, so he knew them better than any other man could. As the sun began to set, and a storm rolled in, Nobunaga seized his opportunity and rode upon the Torakaga camp. The battle was over before it had even begun, the casualties on the Torakaga side were brutal, losing even their daimyo and heir in the process. Nobunaga had lost not one soldier, and made use of never before seen firearms in Rokugan, the Muskets. By the end of the night, Nobunaga had even secured Janata. By the month's end, all of Odawari would be his. He was soon named grand advisor to the Tosakani Shogun. Though it was plain to see that the Tosakani shogunate was destined to fail.   Now often seen as radical, and ambitious, Nobunaga works to protect the Tosakani Shogun with his powerful military, pushing for more and more firearms to be made for his men. Rumors state that he is soon planning to invade the Torakai clan for their transgressions upon the Tosakani soil, while other rumors state that he will soon make his move to claim the title of Shogun for himself. Nobunaga's name has grown infamous throughout Rokugan for his distaste of Samurai culture, and willingness to cast aside honor in favor of victory. He has even been known to burn whole shrines to the ground for rising against him. Those who side with him, however, are treated with much respect and care. Their people are attended to on a level thought impossible before the civil war, with new technology and innovations in medicine. Some even speak of Nobunaga founding a wholly unique magic never before seen on Rokugan soil.
